A piece of Denmarks heritage in relation to the Cold War, which ended inthe beginning af the 1990ties. Unbelievable what what done in order to observe the "enemy´s" movements and to establish defense buildings of this kind.
Phantastic collection of equipment and material.

The Stevnsfort is pure James Bond. The guided tour takes you deep below ground and through 1 mile of underground hallways. It's like being in a James Bond movie. The fortress is built during the Cold War and has apparently been preserved exactly as is was, when the armed forces used it up until 2000. Over ground there is a complete missile site, and the guided tour takes you through it all.
The tour is in Danish language but they have these awesome audioguides for free which takes you through everything in English.
An amazing experience at the beautiful cliffs of Stevns and recommended for the whole Family.

The museum offers a lot in terms of history and the experience of being in the facility. Using mostly anecdotes and items in the facility, the guide told about the history of the facility and the historical context it was set in. For example, when talking about the geology and properties of the chalk the facility is dug into, he goes on to talk about the protection against nuclear weapons and the supposed plans to attack Denmark.

The museum shows the facility almost exactly as it originally stood. There are no posters or signs showing or telling anything - it's just the facility.

Stevnsfort which only ceased operations in 2000 is a fascinating piece of recent history and well worth a visit whether you remember the cold war days, or if you're young and learning about it in school. You get a real sense of what it was like for Denmark perched on the edge of the Baltic facing "the enemy" and also at the human level what the men stationed here experienced, living under ground. The whole place seems frozen in time, and is really atmospheric. It's off the beaten track, about an hour's drive from Copenhagen, but it rewards the time taken to visit it. Only downside is that the English guided tour lacks the level of information you get on the Danish tour, but that's not unusual outside of English speaking countries.

A really interesting - in operation until year 2000 - secret underground fort established to listen,  monitor and fight the threat from a USSR/Warzaw pact invasion.

Plans from recently opened archives in Poland are on display above ground - and really gives a surprising perspective to what was paranoia and what was due preparedness.

To go below ground into the actual base - which really is the main thing - you need to either book the guided tour in advance, or come early in the day while places are still available.
Been there more times with our kids and friends and it remains really fascinating.
