Pawapi Resort
Ranked #2 of 9 Ko Muk B&B and Inns
Reviewed January 16, 2014 via mobile

I had such a fantastic time in Koh Muk! The Pawapi Resort ticked all of the boxes for myself and my traveling companions.
We arrived and had lunch (as we were famished after out long journey) and the meal was delicious - as were the subsequent meals that we purchased there. Maybe a little on the pricey side for us, but worth the splurge on occasion.
Although there were minimal staff working throughout our stay, the overall experience was personal and friendly. The staff were always polite and modest, while managing to show their genuine Thai smile.
We stayed in a beachfront bungalow, which was neat and had a laid-back feel. The bungalow was a tidy and simple wooden room, that projected an authentic feel. Mosquito nets were provided and worked a treat..Great to see fly-screens also!
Being an animal-lover there were lots of puppies and dogs to get to know on the island. The resort's unofficial dog was the best! She had a very beautiful nature and loved to dig up and chase crabs.
Koh Muk and Pawapi proved to be such a relaxing escape from the craziness of 'Tourist Ravaged Thailand'.
I would love to return one day :)

We only regret that we hadn't read all bad judgement before booking this resort. Three nights at Pawapi was à nightmare. We have travelld all over Thailand for 15 years and visited many Island resort in different prices. Pawapi is far to expensive and do not compensarion in any other way.
The rooms never gets cleaned and is full of mosquitos and cockroches.
It is almost impossible to get anything to eat and the staff is a joke.
The manager had given up trying. There was only one male employee that know the word "service". He made his very best to drive us to Charlie Beach with the boat or bike. He also sprayed room for mosquitos and did his very best.
Pawapi is not worth the price and we should not go back even for free.

We are very sorry to hear your stay with us was not a happy one. As you can see from our other reviews this is an unusual occurrence. We would like to say that we have now changed the management team and solved a few ongoing difficulties. Our new manager, a man of great experience and reputation, has implemented new systems and we are confident he has got it right.
We would be very happy if you decide to give us another chance. Should you decide so please make yourself known to us and we will make every effort to make your holiday a standout experience.
Again, apologies.

Best regards

Pawapi is wonderful, our only disappointment is that we didn't stay for longer!

We were greeted by Yut, the new Manager, who is friendly, helpful and always on hand to pour a drink or give local information.

The huts were great, simple but clean and some nice touches, such as fridge, kettle and hot water. They all have beautiful views and a lovely size balcony with daybeds. We stayed in the standard rooms, which were more than enough for us.

The restaurant food was fantastic, a good choice of dishes, everything we tried was delicious! Nil, who runs it, is so lovely, really eager to please and sweet. The restaurant is on an empty beach and lit by candles, with just a handful of tables. Breakfast was great, ordered from a menu of different eggs, fresh fruit, toast etc - the omelettes were the best I've ever had.

The new management here has made a huge difference, they really care that your stay is memorable. Special mention to their lovely little dog, Muk, who is very sweet and loves a cuddle ; )

If you are looking for an island that is quiet, chilled, with beautiful beaches, Koh Muk is the one! Pawapi is just a few minutes walk to the local village, we liked this, as it wasn't just a tourist island, but a home to many native Thais too.

Our 3 days in this resort were unforgetable experience! When we arrived we were welcomed by friendly english owner Paul, who told us everthing about resort and island. This place reflects nature of the owner, who keeps everything in natural style. Bungalows were new, clean and kept clean every day with amazing view on the beach.
Their kitchen offers traditional thai cuisine, simple, fresh, delicious!
Beach is natural with so soft and white sand. Everything is settled in beautiful coconat grove, see is clear and hot. Pawapi is quiet place with relaxed atmosphere and with owner, who gives his heart in this place. It reflects the appearance of the restaurant, bungalows and surroundings where you can have a romantic dinner in the light of the candle. Paul is always around to give you good advice about dinner, travel, island or how to spend evening on the beach with his classic records.
For us - when Koh Mook - than Pawapi!!!

The bungalows, both old and new, were great and represented ok value for money in an increasingly expensive country. The old bungalows (we stayed in number 2) are spacious, comfortable (though not luxurious), had large and breezy balconies and INCREDIBLE views. Having a fridge in the bungalow was a real plus.

The thing that lets the place down is the service - when the owner Neal (who is a helpful and affable guy) isn't around, the service goes to pot. Trying to get anything done (from cleaning the room to getting a drink and/or some food) becomes nigh on impossible. If Neal is going to charge 2500 baht for the old bungalows and 5000 for the new a/c ones then he really has to impress upon his staff the fact that the guests' expectations are going to be higher. I like the fact that it is far more relaxed than Sivalai up the road, but for the money Pawapi should be providing a better restaurant, a far better breakfast (which is basic/limited at best) and staff who don't look like you are inconveniencing them when you have a request. Thumbs up though to the young girl who staffed the front desk in Neal's absence - she spoke fairly limited English but always smiled and clearly tried her best to be accommodating.

I would mention that the bar area on the beach is very pleasant in the evening when Neal is around to play his music - a lovely atmosphere.

The resort is a good one - the location is simply fabulous with a stunning beach, but to step up and be really great they need to improve the common areas and the service. A resort is about far more than the room you sleep in.

Thanks for a positive review and we take on board the points you have highlighted for improvement. This coming season we have all experienced service staff and a good few of them speak english (especially the front desk!) We also have an English speaking GM and have improved the restaurant and included breakfast. I am confident we are improving and feedback is everything to us. Charm, great view, a sense of something unique, we know these are our strong points and i can assure you the service is now on a much more professional level. Thanks again and you are welcome back anytime.

From outside, this resort looks very nice - but beware!! It can end up being your worst nightmare. We stayed at the first bungalow (nr 7) and at night, we were devoured by bedbugs. The small bedbegs was everywhere in the cabin and in the bed (and in the reception), and since the front desk was not staffed at night, we were forced to sleep on the beach among crabs and other interesting animals. The next morning we met the rest of the overnight guests at Pawapi. Some of them told that it was not all mornings that there was served proper breakfast. One morning they just put a package toast up. (We didnt eat anything that morning, it did not look very nice). Moreover Pawapi announced that they had a restaurant. You can not call this a restaurant. There were 1 or 2 dishes to choose from a very big menu and some of the other guest advised us not to eat there, because they had served chicken leftovers the day before. There was a really bad mood among the guests, many of the guests wanted their money back for the last few nights, but it was a struggle for them (advise: dont pay in advance if you go there... They want you to do that - and that is not normal to do). We spent the whole the next morning to get our money back because our cabin was useless. As said, we cannot recommand this resort, unless you want very simple huts with bedbegs and a way too high a price. If you must stay on Koh Muk, we can only recommend Sivalai - everyone stay there and it is a wonderful place. It is the only place you can eat too. Our advice is to stay far away from Pawapi!

Room Tip: Dont go to nr 7 - bedbegs!!!!

We have to say a big sorry on this occasion. Unknown to us the previous occupants of this room had taken in some beach puppies into their room on the last couple of nights of their holiday with us. The room was cleaned and the bed changed etc. but some of the fleas had gotten under the mattress. This was followed by your check in two days later and yes, there was a problem. We immediately replaced the mattress for a brand new one on the day you left and had the room sprayed and cleaned from top to bottom with the appropriate chemicals but it was too late, the damage was done. Our apologies once again.

Unfortunately this still seems to be the best place on the wonderful Koh Mook island. Sivalai up the beach is probably much more luxurious, but it is also very crowded with all the bungalows very close to each other and has a definite tourist-resort feel to it.

We had to move bungalows, so I can offer an opinion on both types they offer.

- newer bungalows: 12
new and very spacious they are quite nice indeed. the balcony overlooking the beach is quite fantastic, but could use some shadow (the new bungalows have no sun cover over the balconies)
The bathroom is spacious, but a bit of a joke with the shower water running through the whole bathroom to the next sink, since the one in the shower is to elevated
overall very recommendable, but overpriced especially considering the breakfast

- older bungalows: 5
those are quite charming, but very rustic. Luckily they have spanned a net over the whole bungalow, but it was full of stuff and bat [--] that trickled down from time to time.
The lighting is not enough, which in the evening gives you the feeling that the mosquitos see you, but you dont see them.

The breakfast is an ridiculous affair, it would be hard to think offering a worse breakfast. Please: raise the price a dollar or two and offer a decent breakfast. The service at breakfast is not-existent, which leaves an especially annoying feeling since the hotel stuff sits 10m further with obviously nothing to do. Cafe is an instant variety, bread is the worst money can find. Jam was surprisingly good. It is no wonder, no one tried the restaurant while we where there. Who would expect a good dinner, after getting such a breakfast.

Cleaning service for us was good, they seemed to clean really everything, but other guests complained about bugs under the matress while we were there.

Thanks for your comments on our spacious new bungalows, and yea we do believe that the view from our elevated balconies is unequalled anywhere on the island. So thanks for the thumbs up on that. As for the service, well we have improved it vastly and I think the guests this season will feel the difference. We now have quite a number of English speakers amongst the staff and a front desk and GM that are fairly fluent. The restaurant in particular has been upgraded and now boasts a great new menu with a chef that used to work at the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok! I’ve tasted it myself and her cooking, both Thai and western is great!
As for the problem with the bat? Well we have sealed the front of the bungalows so nothing can enter except the cool night air 
Thanks again for the comments and welcome back again
