“Ambitious architecture with significant shortcomings”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

The architecture of the villa we had (Rangoli) is very appealing and the setting of the resort at the lake is great.
But we had several problems with the accomodation which could not be solved by the staff during our stay. There was no wifi, the room safe could not be closed, herds of ants in the bed, jakuzzi was out of order. Staff who checked the safe could not repair it but forgot to close doors of the Villa and we found all doors open when we came back from a walk.
We asked for help. The staff was friendly but also a bit helpless and the manager was not available.
Sorry to say that the relation of price and service was not appropriate. Still, the Ayu may be the best place at the Batur lake.

Room Tip: No recommendation for the Ayu. But if you stay there, just make a 10 min walk outside of the gate...

We stayed here for our engagement. The staff was more than happy to help with all the preparations. They organized a small canoe with full of flowers so we could have a canoe trip on Lake Batur. Also they gave us the Honeymoon Suite without extra cost. Everyone was always friendly and endeavoring to make this stay a wonderful experience for us.

Rooms were clean. You can have breakfast/dinner (any meal) in your villa without extra charge. Or you choose one of the two restaurants. A special are the warm spring pools which you can visit free of charge when staying at the Ayu Kintamani.

It seems that the new management makes great efforts to bring the hotel back to it's old days. They are on the right track and if they keep up the good work it will be paradise again.

Room Tip: If you are a couple ask for the honeymoon suite (Villa Suhagrat)

First off, I would like to say thank you to the management and staffs of The Ayu Kintamani for accomodating my wife and I during our short stay in Bali. Despite the far distance from Denpasar, you are greeted with the relaxing beauty of Kintamani area. It was so pleasant that I stopped for a whilee and wish this place as my home, my last place before I depart to the afterworld.

The surrounding of this villa is surprisingly beautiful, and that's the only adjective I can use to describe it. The private pool was so inviting that I wish I can stay immersed in it everyday. However, for my villa (Suhagrat), the outside jacuzzi was not working properly (the jacuzzi can't hold off the water).

There are two restaurants, which was operated by the same kitchen; Flamboyant and Lakeside Restaurant. The price is also reasonable and the foods tasted great with the majestic Mount Abang as the background view.

The staffs were also helpful to us. They really tried their best in making our stay a good one. Their English language competency can't be considered top class, but you'd still understand them. When I called the reception about the warm water running out, a staff hurried to our villa and checked on the issue. How's that for a 5-star service?

Apart from that, you can also charter a full or half day tour to any sitea in Bali. Just name it, and your driver/guide will try to take you to that place (he will provide suggestion on which place you can go and where to stop for a good scenary photo). The first tour that I took with a guide (Pak Yon) was very excellent. He took us to 7 tourist spots in one day, and tried his best to reach Tanah Lot to see the temple during the sunset. We are very satisfied with him. On the third day of our stay in the villa, we chartered another full day tour in hope to again see more of Bali's great spots. The first two places that the driver took was to our expectations, however the rest was a horrible experience (if I'm not mistaken, it's Pak Nyoman-yes, I said the name so others will not face the misery I had). We wanted to go to Lovina Beach, and instead he took a turn into a backyard of somebody's house and said we're at the edge of Lovina Beach. It was dirty, and unlikely a tourist spot at all. Later on we asked whether there is a market where we can buy gift (and he said yes, it's in Singaraja). To our surprise, it was not like what we imagined. It was closed to a morning market that sells hardware, clothes, fruits, etc. Before heading back, we asked to stopped by at a restaurant at Kintamani that we saw on our way to the villa. He said it was closed and brought us to another one, shabby looking (despite a vwry stunning scenary of Mount Batur). We ordered white rice for two person, Ikan Mujair, Mixed Vegetables, Fried Chicken, and two warm orange juices. The price? Shockingly Rp. 450,000. That is almost triple the normal price you would get from a normal restaurant, let alone from the villa's. With sour faces as we left the restaurant, we asked whether there is any place to buy souvenirs, and he said his daughter-in-law does sell some crafts such as bangles. We asked whether there are tshirts, and he nodded. As we arrived at Toya Bongkah, we were approached by his daughter-in-law that only sells bangles (at Rp. 50,000 per one, compared to normal price of Rp. 10,000!). We were very unhappy and felt cheated with the driver's way of conning us.

Despite this angry-rambling, I'd still say that The Ayu Kintamani is one that offer the best stay in Bali, away from the maddening road of Kuta and Denpasar. Even if it's without the promotion (I got Groupon deal), I would suggest this place to families, friends, and you dear readers

Thank you.

Here s the background, the ayu is a 5star Hotel that is located by the batur lake hence, fantastic backdrop, relaxing with gorgeous weather and windy all day. The management changed recently and I think the hotel is turning around slowly. Reading thru all the comments after getting our deal on group on gave us very cold feet!we were meant to stay for four nights but changed to two nights after going thru all the bad reviews. And so we arrived via our own transport after 3 hours from Gianyar. The drive itself was very scenic as you do pass thru ubud, padi terraces, rural life etc. The climb meant we were greeted with cooler weather than the lowlands.  Arrived at 7pm, met by the front desk with cool drinks and hot towels and brought to the upgraded honeymoon suite which was nice. Only had problems with slightly dusty floors and big fat mosquitoes at this point. Our boys,3 and 1 yr olds were excited to see the heart shaped pool, outdoor jacuzzi as well as a big indoor jacuzzi that we really had to lock the doors to stop them wandering out. The fridge was stocked, the kettle works. 2 lightbulb blew, there were no in room safe, and the hotel information book contains only the rom service menu. So far so good.
We slept soundly and woke up at 8, going straight for a skinny dip in the pool which had a fountain on the side with water from the natural hot spring. In daylight, the villa looks good still bar some cobwebs. We did notice there were pieces of plastic in the front hallway pool, the plants looked a little bit tired and the living room tv having poor reception. Breakfast by the lake was excllent in terms of view and surroundings but disappointing by the presence of flies. We were flapping while trying to enjoy the American breakfast which was smaller than other places we ve been to. Post breakfast involved more swimming and walks around the compound. There wasn't much to do with kids so the pool was the main attraction for them. We couldnt risk walking with a stroller as the roads were narrow so We hired the hotel guide to drive us around the lake !for around 150000rp. The scenery was absolutely brilliant. We had dinner at the floating restaurant at around sunset. The local catch from the lake would be either tilapia or tilapia and tasted fresh and meaty.
Climbing mount batur seems to be the highlight of everyone's visit here. We gave it a miss as it was just not feasible to wake up at 3 with the kids to go hiking for 2 hours to catch sunrise. Nope, we prefer the challenge of the big bed in our room, thank you very much.we will probably return in a few years and do the climb then.
So it was time to leave, the manager decided to drive us down to the airport. W left at 1 and reached the airport at 430, ample time to catch our flight at 730.
Overall, the resort had seen better days, seems to be turning a corner in terms of management and hopefully will return to its glory days once the maintenance issue, flies and lack of kiddies activities are sorted out. Will probably return to climb the mountain and for the peaceful views!
Ps- the country's tourism minister decided to stay there the day after we left. All the best guys!

Room Tip: Get upgraded! You could also go camping for a round 500000rp per tent per night I think. Lots of lit...

Dear Valued Guest

Good day to you

A great opportunity to saying our high gratitude of your generous comment toward our villa. A big thank also to our manager to present his big caring of your stay. It's truly a big pleasure for us to hear your satisfied stay in our The Ayu Villa. For any weakness that you still found at our property should be a good input for us to do review on it and do some improvement toward it. With a big hope to again welcome your coming next year and join us to hike the mount. Anyway the minister of tourism had been coming to our property and all were fortunately great. Was a really fantastic moment to be able to satisfy all people :)

Thank you so much for your kindness
have your blessed day

many thanks and regards

We booked this the same day and paid £88 - having done no comparisons I had no idea if this was expensive or cheap. When we arrived we were upgraded to the honeymoon villa even though we were only staying one night and it was absolutely gorgeous. I never wanted to leave. The hot spring swimming pool, outdoor lounge with large TV, outdoor shower, massive jacuzzi in the bathroom and huge bedroom and separate dressing room made this an exceptional place to stay. I never wanted to leave especially the next day when we found a massive pool with swim up bar and two very hot pools fed by the hot springs! The only thing this hotel lacks is a bar for the evening - there may have been one which we just didnt find. In any event it is a beautiful and quiet place and I would thoroughly recommend it for a few nights whilst travelling around Bali.

Room Tip: If you can have the honeymoon villa but I beleive they all have their own hot spring pools etc.

A return visit to The Ayu. Kintamani is beautiful and the Hot Springs are an absolute lure.
We had a good time the first visit, this time a year ago. There has been a seismic decline in the maintenance and staff capability, not to mention a resort falling apart literally.

Where do i start. We arrived at 4pm, for 235 USD per night we were checked into a roadside villa. All these villas have no privacy to their pools and spa - the main reason we go there.
Nope, can we change ? ...sure. However of the 13 villas at The Ayu Kintamani, 6 are currently used in the availability and only TWO have no maintenance issues.

I do believe it's actually down to one as the one we were housed in after FOUR hours trying to find one which had water, air - con and a jacuzzi that worked we still had no air con.

It would appear this hotel is breathing its last breathes of life as it has a fantastic location - second to none.

We decided to go down to the main restaurant for dinner to lighten up the stress of finding a room that worked ! however we were ushered to the Bar as the music in the near by spa beneath the Restaurant is blaring enchanting Balinese Top 10 through bad speakers from 6 am to 7pm. Even my husband whom is Balinese was wincing.

The bar only has one table with lights that work above it and that was taken by someone with a dog. So we ate whatever it was they served by candlelight. I could not see the food but i certainly tasted that it was off.

Even this was not going to stop us from having a nice childless getaway.
We prepared to get into the hot tub with a glass on wine which we had brought with us. Not a soul had a bottle opening in the whole resort. Thats ok, we pushed it in and sank into our tub.

Little did we realize until my husband noticed that one of the Resorts security people had decided to have a front row viewing seat into our villa on the wall of the adjoining Villa ( number 3 in line we tried however it had no air con and no staff to service it )

I trust that they enjoyed the view, i was less than happy with this and my husband was less than an impressed needless to say that Security themselves actually required discipling in bad behaviour not to mention illegal and quite confronting to know a man is watching you nude in a spa with your husband.

Readers, unless you can get this dump for next to nothing, don't go or expect to be horrified at a very sad hotel that leaves us wondering way they keep the doors open at all.

Dear Lovely Guest

Your comment keeps our eyes on to read. It's all valuable and worth to have those fair story about your feeling during your stay in our villa. We do understand that it was very disappointing to stay with horrible surround you. For any unpleasant thing, please let us do our apology.
We would not play our feedback point by point but generally we would be surely doing our best effort in improving our service and property presentation.

There's none intending to disappoint others. As a hospitality management and provider, we would be so much happy when our guest is happier.

Hope your input could be reflected and creating better improvement for us

Unfortunately I do not agree with any of the views below and somewhat question thier authenticity. The hotel is large and was once I imagine grand, but is now almost deserted by guests and staff.
It has also now falling to the ravages of time and weather and lack of maintenance, with gardens dying, ponds empty and paths broken and falling away. We arrived at night and the staff where welcoming but the long walk to our room throug a maze of paths with no lighting somewhat concerned us. Dinner was interesting as many items and wines annouonced as no longer available or to have run out. Hey even ran out of tonic water after my husband had three small cans. The capucino machine also noted to be on the blink.

The staff were gracious but english is very poor and they are trying to be as helpful as they are trying circumstances. I think may be 2 or 4 other guests here even though we dinned alone.

We feel very sorry for the staff as the hotel is a falling down ghost town, and the owner or owners should either close down and renovate or just close down.

On the positives the rooms are advertised at around three hundred dollars and we got a agoda special for $135 Australian. The view is amazing and as I said staff try very hard as best they can to assist you. Bed was very comfortable and room are large and clean. And pool looks inviting. The villas are built for warm weather so if you do come come in the summer as very cold in September.

Not sure what story is water but showers are only Luke warm....despite requests.

It will be interesting to see if they are still open in a few months.

Dear Our Great Guest

It's been so much grateful to hear those your pro and cons. It's surely our effort now, as the new management of The Ayu Villas, to reflect to your positive and negative feedback to be used as the light for making significant improvement and keeping this property still open for guest stay and holiday :)

We do apologize that your stay were so much frustrating you by any unexpected atmosphere
We are always attempting to bring this property and resorts to the best eligibility as a guest home, instead of ghost town. We are ensuring your next coming should be so much greater where people are there doing various activities and so busy running and walking around the resorts, with happiness and relaxation.

However, we are highly appreciating your kind input
Have your blessed day

Many thanks and regards
