“Beautiful hotel, but horrendous action to fire alarm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2012

First stay after many visits to Jberg. Chose hotel for its location and value for money in an expensive city. Easy walking to Montecasino.Foyer is beautiful as is bar areas and restaurant. Rooms are good without being spectacular.

However on first night was woken up at 4am to smoke alarm. Got out of room quickly to chaos. Guests were not told anything. There was no announcements of where to go, particularly after fire doors were closed. I helped several guests to fire escapes. Went to lobby to find complete lack of training on what to do. I was told it was a false alarm so went back to room. Next day asked to speak to manager to be told circumstances and that it was nothing. Im sorry but when my life is at stake...it is not nothing. Staff should be trained in how to deal with situation. Also management should be courteous to send a note to every guest apologizing and explaining what happened. If I had not pushed, I would not have found out anything....and that is what the staff said to me as well i.e. " we only dealt with customers who have questions".

For my mind a poor effort....

Stayed 3 times there so far, can only recommend the hotel. Rooms are clean, spacious and modern. Staff is ever so friendly, the kitchen is excellent. Breakfast offers nice variation, steak sandwiches are epic. Can only recommend.

Stayed in this hotel for two weeks for business and overall it was a very pleasant experience.

The hotel is part of the MonteCasino complex, of which I believe there are three hotels, and which the Southern Sun is the ‘middle priced’ one. The hotel emulates itself as a sort of mock Italian building in line with the rest of the complex.

Check In was fast. The rooms are slightly on the small side (compared to US or Asian chain hotel standards), but perfectly adequate and very up to date. Bathrooms come with separate shower and bath which I always prefer, and both the room and bathroom were spotless.

Breakfast was good, with choice of buffet continental or ‘full-English’ with an onsite chef preparing everything fresh which is another added bonus instead of having everything under heat lamps. Table service from tea and coffee was also very fast.

I did have dinner in the restaurant one night, and I would say it was ‘averagely good’. Given the main complex for the Casino is only five minutes walk, I spent the rest of the two weeks dining there, for which there is an excellent range of good restaurants (catering all the main world cuisines).

The hotel also has a gym which houses a couple of treadmills and bikes, and an elliptical and stepping machine. There are also free weights, swiss balls and mats. Overall a very good gym, and for the two weeks I was there I only ever saw one other person – so no mad rushes in the morning or the evening to find a machine to use.

One of the highlights of staying in this hotel were the staff – particularly on how friendly and efficient they were. Angelina / Angie on reception is particularly noteworthy for a mention, as were the bar staff on the lower ground bar overlooking the pool who served in the evening.

If there is one slightly ‘niggle’ I had, was that on the last day I was trying to have a longer sleep, and whilst I had the ‘do not disturb’ on the door, the maids were quite noisy in the adjoining rooms chattering away to each other. However, this barely detracted from the quality of stay I had.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone for business or pleasure. My only note of caution is that if you are here for business, and do need to commute in a morning – take note that the traffic through ‘FourWays’ can be murder in a morning and evening, so it might be worth looking for a hotel closer to where you need to commute to if it is far.

I will most certainly stay in this hotel again when on business here.

Room Tip: I found that if you joined there 'frequent guest' programme, you're entitled to 2hours o...

We stayed here for a few days, while my husband was at work. Service is great. Rooms are nice and clean, and properly serviced every day. Very stylish decorations. Great restaurant, for all meals! The desk employees were extremely helpful, booking a tour for me and helping me acquire a Jabulani World Cup soccer ball for my friend's son, back in the states!

We stayed here for 2 nights between safari and flying home and I have to say we loved it. Very funky and new hotel - great modern style with sumptuous furnishings. Our room was beautiful with a very well appointed bathroom. Breakfast was also included in our rate which was a great start to our day. We really wanted somewhere to relax after many many game drives and car travel everywhere, and it was great to be in the Montecasino complex and feel safe and be able to walk around the many shops and restaurants which were great value for money, along with cinema complex, bowling alley and video arcade there was lots of family fun to share. The location was great as we had planned to go to the Lion Park which was only 15 - 20 mins drive away and the hotel easily organised a driver to take us there and also came to collect us when we called when we where finished. The Lion park is a great day trip from here as kids and we had the cahnce to get up close and personal with lion cubs and also giraffe which was a fabulous ending to our South African experience.

Room Tip: We stayed in a deluxe room with two double beds which was more than fine for 2 adults and young chil...

My partner and I stayed here for a few nights in August. It is a nice looking hotel in both the rooms and other areas. Staff were all polite and helpful. The rooms aren't the biggest and has strange doors opening from the bath into the room and also a normal bathroom door. Wasn't a problem just thought it was random. Breakfast was really nice with lots of variety but felt they could maybe extend it to 11am rather than 10.30. Again not a problem as such, just a preference as I arrived late on the first evening from a long flight so would have liked to have slept longer. As it was very cold at night the bar area wasn't the best to sit in at night although they had brought in heaters it still wasn't too warm. We paid for the use of wifi but felt these days it could have been cheaper or free along with the room.
Overall though a very nicely styled and clean hotel in a good location.
