“Breath taking scenery from this superb B&B”
Reviewed June 16, 2008

I know the word awesome is tossed around too freely these days but in the case of Le Prince Noir it is just one of many superlatives to describe this stunning B&B.
Yes it is a steep climb to the top and yes you have to leave your car at the bottom until later in the evening but the walk through the village is so fascinating that you will not even notice.
Benoit greeted us warmly and enthusiastically told us the history of the home. We were only spending 1 night there so we decided to lash out and book the apartment and were so pleased we did. It is the most amazing place I've ever stayed in with a queen size bed raised up really high on huge posts. The walls are part rock and it feels like you are living in a cave but with all the mod cons you could need. There is a little fully equipped kitchen but to be honest it is such a priviege to wander the town when all the tourists have gone home that it would have been hard to force ourselves to stay in and cook dinner. Instead we ate a very reasonably priced meal in a cafe about half way up.
The bathroom could take a little getting used to for very tall people as you sit on a stool and hold a shower....suited us fine and the water was hot. The view at night excedes expectations as the old ruins of the castle are lit up....amazing.
Ute gave us our breakfast early as we had to leave. She was apologetic that the croissants wouldn't have been ready at that time but to be honest, fresh toast made a nice change and along with fruit and yoghurt we were very happy with our meal which we ate in the little eating nook. This was an experience we will always remember.

This is a superb place to stay in a superb village in the dramatic Alpilles of Provence and excellent value for money. Le Prince Noir is full of character with tapestries and antiques in each room together with very comfortable bed and friendly hosts. The breakfast is exceptional with a wide variety of local produce (croissants, baguettes, yoghurt etc..) The rooms have views over Les Baux and the surrounding Alpilles.

Le Prince Noir is an experience that had us feeling like we stepped back in time. Its style was in keeping with the rustic village of Les Baux with rough granite hewn walls, yet the amenities were modern and pleasant. The hosts were friendly and extremely helpful and served a wonderful breakfast to us on the rooftop terrace. This was romantic with a capital "R".

The town itself is open to cars only in the evening and parking is outside the town walls. We parked and then toured the town some before checking in. Later in the evening we brought the car in and dropped off our bags. It worked out fine, though the streets are VERY narrow.

This was a wonderful place and I highly recommend a night or two in this quaint and historic town.

  • Liked — Historical look & feel
  • Disliked — The narrow streets in old town made it harder to get our bags in.

We stayed at Le Prince Noir for two nights in August 2007 and completely love this hotel!

The hotel is set in the most amazing position overlooking Les Baux, just below the castle. We had amazing views and clear skys provided a perfect sunset.

The hotel was very clean and our room was spacious and comfortable (we stayed in the cheapest room and it was very nice). The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was one of the best we had on our 2 month trip around Europe!

We have no hesitation in reommending this Hotel. Las Baux is an amazing small town and experiencing it after the tourist crowds have departed for the day was magical.

Note, if you have a car you will need to carry your bags for 300m as cars are not allowed into Les Baux.

What an amazing place! It is truly an experience staying here - the website doesnt do it justice! It is literally built into the side of the stone city - which is so quaint and charming. This is a sleepy little town with so much character and unlike any other we stayed in Europe. Highly highly recommend. The owners were so nice and saw to our every need.........the freshest breakfast we had in all of Europe - and we ate on their balcony overlooking the city - breath-taking. LOVED IT! You wont be disappointed.

I chose Le Prince Noir for its location at the top of Les Baux de Provence and for its terraces with out of this world views and I was not disappointed in the least. The website photos are accurate - I have posted some of my own for your review as well. The bathroom was unique with the shower open to the wash basin and a wood slat floor - the toilet was in a separate room. The bed super comfy with a view straight out the sliding glass door to the terrace and the hills. My room (Le Bijou) also had a small kitchen with microwave, frig, and table. Breakfast was standard European - croissants, baguettes, yogurt, fruit, juice, coffee, etc. and can be served to you in your room or on the terrace which I highly recommend.

But some words of warning... Les Baux is closed to cars during the day and even after hours you may choose not to drive its one and only one lane road that goes straight up the hill to the chateau because it looks quite difficult to maneuver. When making your reservation you ARE advised of such so I cam prepared. When I arrived at Les Baux I parked my car in the visitor's parking lot and took a small bag of essentials with me when I checked in. After seeing the road I decided that I would not drive the short distance to the B&B and just carry a smaller overnight bag with me and leave the large suitcase in the car. It is an uphill climb and up more stairs into Le Prince and then more stairs to your room, but the reward is well worth your effort. That being said, one should be in fairly good physical condition if they are considering staying here.

The overall experience was truly awesome and unique.

I recently stayed here with my family in one of the larger rooms with 2 bedrooms and it was wondrful!
Not only are you right in Les Baux, but this B and Bl backs on to the castle!..
The rooms was very large, and included a balcony and the breakfast was served in a lovely warm cozy room and was just wonderful!
Would we stay here again? Yes!!!
