This is absolutely worth a short (about 1 1/2 hours, maybe a bit less) drive from Calgary (about 3 1/2 hours from Edmonton). It is worth every single mile of driving time, and every single penny of admission. Our entire family - 2 adults, 2 kids aged 12 and 9 - thoroughly enjoyed it. The drive first of all was lovely -- we went in mid-July 2008 (July 14/08 to be exact) and the canola was all over the fields in its bright yellow glory. The yellow canola, the blue sky, the green grass and some purple plant made for a very scenic and attractive drive. We stopped at Horseshoe Canyon along the way -- AMAZING!! Make sure a stop there is part of your visit to the Royal Tyrrell. The museum itself is wonderful - absolutely world-class and must be seen. Our children saw a lot on their big Alberta vacation, but the Tyrrell Museum was a highlight without a doubt. We all came away a litle more informed, and also feeling a little less significant in the whole big picture of evolution. Food for thought for sure! The museum has a nice section near the beginning that has big glass windows showing the labs and people working on the fossils - really cool to see. For the children, however, nothing tops seeing the big dinosaurs tower over them! Save some time to walk to the trails outside if you can. And save a bit of money to purchase something from the gift shop, too.

Everyone interested in dinosaurs (Or not!) should make a worthwhile stop at the Tyrrell Museum. The first room has some interesting computer-quiz facts you can play, among some dinosaurs. The next rooms are very well done, with very nice pictures on the walls, and real dinosaurs reconstructed with bones in front of it, so that you can imagine what the land looked like at dinosaurs time.

The museum will take from 2 hours to an entire day to visit inside. Add more time if you make the dig outside, but you will anyhow need more time to walk on the trail outside.

We did not do the fossils dig, did not read every fact, or play every quiz inside, but we walked the approximate 1 km. trail outside, and it took us around 3 and a half hours to make it.

Whether or not you are interested in dinosaurs, you will be blown-away by the sheer scope of the exhibits here. My family visited on a rainy day so there were no outside digs available. However we went to an indoor classroom for a 'virtual tour & dig' which was really fabulous. There were about 30 people of all ages & there was lots of participation & hands-on activities so even the youngest kids were interested. There are also many interactive displays throughout the museum. We've travelled extensively in both North America & Europe so we can say this is one of the best museums we've ever seen. You can easily spend a full day inside but need to allow an extra day if you want to do outside tours. Also there is an excellent cafeteria here with a wide selection of healthy food choices.

I visited this museum in April 2001. I must say it is an impressive achivement of displays and active research. I highly recommend this museum to anyone. It's an easy 3-4 hours of time lost in science and discovery.

It's a small drive from Calgary and in the summer heat it might be much but in April with small crowds, I was very impressed!
