Took train ride from Stettler, AB to Big Valley. At Big Valley, had time to walk around the town to see museum displays and other historical buildings. Had a turkey buffet meal at the Community Hall in Big Valley. Very good food. Had two young grandchildren along for the ride. Interesting historical Canadian rail route. Plenty of announcements and plenty of attention to safety by all crew members. Diverse mix of passenger cars. Entertainment along the way and on board the train. You could walk through the different cars to locations to purchase snacks and souvenirs. Rode train on Fri. July 12, 2013.

I really enjoyed the ride on the steam train. The meal in Big Valley was excellent. This excursion is a slow one but thoroughly enjoyable.

Can't believe how much fun we all had on the Teddy Bear Special trip. Everyone we encountered demonstrated such effort and pride in the operation, and tried to make sure everyone was able to enjoy the day. Having said that, the experience was not pushy or "in your face" -- just a well done, relaxing good time.

The operation was organized and well thought-out from start to finish. One example: All seats are reserved on the train so people needn't feel rushed to board in order to obtain seats together. Another example: The trainmen double as parking supervisors so that arrival remains organized and safe. Another example still: The lunch at Big Valley is set up such that lineups are minimal and none of the kids have to wait in an enormous line before eating.

The open air car was great, especially on such a nice sunny day with a cold beer.

Given that kids ride and eat free on the Teddy Bear Special the value is great. Prices at the on-board concessions and bar are surprisingly reasonable.

The only drawback -- and I had to think hard -- the roast beef at lunch was slightly more well-done than I prefer. However, it was actually still very tender and I enjoyed it. (How credible is a review without at least one sticking point anyway? This was in no way a deal breaker.)

If you have train-crazy kids, for the money if you can get to Stettler I think the Teddy Bear Special is probably a better deal than going to see a Thomas show.

If you'd enjoy a relaxing day and some great fun for the kids I'd recommend this 100%!

Buying a train ride ticket with dinner, you'll enjoy much more than what you bargained for! Along with the pleasant 1.5 hour trip to Big Valley chugging past farmers fields & woods paralleling the tracks, watch out! Your train is likely to be robbed, with a theatric gun battle, out of which your tour host becomes the hero taking care of all the bad guys. On safe arrival, pile on as much roast beef & trimmings at the buffet dinner. If you don't walk out satisfied, it's not the cook's fault. Check out local attractions. Yes, the hamlet of Big Valley does have a few. How about the tool, collectible & salt & pepper museum, or perhaps the antique store in town. Enjoy live comedy right in your rail car & not of the canned variety. Your guitar pickin western singer will have your vocals tuned in as you sing along & your lungs pained from laughter as you make your way down the tracks. All together a great outing.
