Happy Day Inn Hotel
Ranked #8 of 10 Hotels in Burnaby
Reviewed May 13, 2007

My husband and I were looking for a cheap hotel close to his parents' condo for a one-night stay. He found the Happy Day Inn on Travelocity. We were a little concerned, based on reviews, but the hotel wasn't bad. The bedding and towels were clean, the room was fairly clean, and we ended up with a small kitchenette as well. Everything was old, but it was all functional. The hallway smelled a little, but the room was fine (and I'm pregnant and very sensitive to smells).

Breakfast was orange juice, coffee and choice of muffin, bagel or donut. Saved us a few dollars, since that's probably what we would have purchased at Starbucks anyway.

All in all, it's a good hotel for one night, just for sleeping on a stopover on your way somewhere. We probably wont stay here once our baby is born, because I dont think I would want the baby crawling on the floor there- the carpet was pretty old. But it worked well for our needs on this trip.

We stayed in Vancouver from May 5th to May 11th. We loved the city and the sites so much therefore we where willing to put up with our smelly cheaper hotel.,it was very far from downtown Vancouver, and the area it was in looked a little rough.
We where having a excellent time until, someone stole my wife's purse. We went sight-seeing and left the purse in the room without the wallet thinking there was no problem. YES....it was taken from our room. We only had my wife's make-up, blank checks, house and car keys and show tickets in it. There was no forced entry so it had to be someone on the staff. I reported it to the manager and it was obivous that nothing was going to be done about it. I called the police and made a report however, the Happy Day Inn just did not care. They showed no sign of concern or empathy and refused to compensate or even acknowledge this could have happened. I would strongly recommend NOT STAYING at this hotel. We've learned for a extra 10 or 20 dollars a night is worth the comfort and safety we should all get and deserve....

I didn't end up staying but did end up paying . . . LOL
I called ahead to the "un"-Happy Day Inn, that I had arrived from my red eye flight and wanted to arrive at a set time and was told "no problem" the room would be ready. I showed up more than an hour later than I said to give them more time. When I arrived I was told that the room was ready and went up a tacky dirty stairway (the condition of the whole hotel) to find a Do Not Disturb sign on the door. I knocked on the filthy, paint chipped door and proceeded in and found a room that was a foul smelling mess as it was not cleaned up from the previous guests. I then told the clerk that I wanted to leave and didn't want to stay and he said it would be cleaned in 15 minutes. Well I don't think Superman could clean up that stinky mess that fast and requested that I not be charged as I had done all I could to move into a room at the time arranged and they failed to provide me with a room as agreed. But they had me as they had swiped my card for a deposit and would not return it. I drove to, and stayed at, the Cassandra Hotel on Kingsway in Vancouver, for similar money, which was excellent ! An expensive night as I paid for 2 rooms but worth it not to stay in the UNHAPPY DAY INN . . .

Pretty cheap place, but quite a way from the waterfront, science world, chinatown...But #106 bus stop is 1 block away. About a 3-5 minute ride down to the skytrain. Then take the skytrain to the tourist destinations (about 20 minutes to waterfront?). If you plan to take the bus to the skytrain, I would recommend you walk past that bus stop to the 7 Eleven about another block away and buy the Day Pass for CAD $8. Bus costs CAD $3.25 and skytrain is about CAD $3.25+. So you can save money if you plan to do more than two rides of bus/skytrain.

Service was pretty good. Front desk was helpful in giving bus & skytrain station location and about Day Pass available at 7 Eleven. It was about 9am and we had a ton of luggage and check-out is 11am, but we don't go to airport (without a car) until noon. Front desk first told us we can leave luggage at front desk, but in the morning they said they have no room and told us to just leave it in the front (in front of the door... ?huh?). But we had about 5 big luggages so they kindly let us put them all back into the room we stayed in and will tell housekeeping to work around them.

The only bad thing about this place is that it's SMELLY! Hallway really stinks and even in the room. Had to keep the "AC" air turned on throughout the night to keep it from being so bad. Room was a bit small and the lights were kinda scary at first when you open it...they sounded like they were bubbling...and the hallway was very narrow (which was hard to get our many luggages through especially with housekeeping who leaves cart in the hallway.

Overall, cheap place to stay in if you are on a budget. Just see if you don't mind the smell and bus/skytrain transportation if no car.

Let me just say that anyone travelling should not stay at this hotel, it smells, there is hair on the sheets (which I don't think have been washed for months) and the service is worse.

The free brekfast is served in the very small front lobbie and consists of old coffee and stale muffins.

I was there for 5 nights. It was clean, the bed was comfortable, the service was freindly and helpful. My only complaint is that it's located in the East end of Burnaby, making it inconvenient and a good distance from the action. But I had a car so it was not a big issue. Bottom line: I'd gladly stay there again and it's the best value I've found.

I stayed here from April 22-29, 2006, and found it to be a pleasant, unpretentious motel. The A/C kept the room pleasantly cool, the front-desk staff was accommodating, and the #106 bus stops one block away. It is in a quiet neighborhood, which is good for sleeping, but it is a 40-minute ride to downtown via the aforementioned bus and the Sky Train. They also offer a free breakfast. The choices were meager, but the donuts and apples were fresh every morning and quite good. Even the house-keeping staff was quite friendly and pointed out attractions for me to see on some days. All-in-all, a great value for your hard-earned dollars and a good place to spend the precious little vacation time you get! I would stay here again if I returned to Vancouver.
