“Good, fast, affordable, and decent decor”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2011

Sushi Garden is conveniently located on Lougheed Hwy beside Staples near Brentwood Mall, Save-on Foods, Executive Hotel, and other businesses in North Burnaby. It's also easily accessible by Sky Train. We've seen the restaurant packed with patrons at times and heard it was good so decided to try it. We went at 8:30 on a Wednesday night and didn't have any problem getting in. The decor was surprisingly a little more upscale than many sushi restaurants we've been to. It has more of a West Coast design than traditional Japanese. They were likely very busy earlier as the floor appeared to have many food scraps on the floor and unfortunately, nobody was cleaning them up. Service was friendly and prompt. However, the restaurant was nearly empty at this point in the evening. We ordered miso soup, gomai salad, spicy tuna sashimi, toro sushi (tuna belly), spicy tuna tempura roll, and negotoro maki. Obviously a tuna night for us. The miso soup could of had a little more flavour but was satisfactory. The gomai salad was made ahead and cold but the dressing was tasty. The sauce on the spicy tuna was quite spicy and resembled Korean Kimchi but was tasty. The toro was the highlight as it was really fresh, perfect temperature, generous size, and melted in our mouths for only $135/piece. The spicy tuna tempura roll was disappointing as it was cold and therefore was likely made ahead. The negotoro maki was average. The prices are very reasonable as the whole dinner only cost $27. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of this restaurant they may make some items ahead of time and could be cold when you receive them. This might work for some items but not for tempura rolls. When you order, and if it's not too busy, you may want to ask that the items be made fresh. Unfortunately, my stomach was upset all night and it seemed to be from dinner. I have read another review about others getting food poisoning and that the restaurant leaves their mayo sitting out. We may return for more toro and to try some other dishes but will also continue on our quest to find a sushi restaurant to replace our favorite spot which recently closed.
