I decided to stay at the Holiday Inn Express during another visit to the Vancouver area. The location is fantastic -- 2-minute walk to a major SkyTrain station, close access to restaurants and shops in the Metrotown mall, easy access to nearby supermarkets, and my rate came with free parking! Yes, you're far away from Vancouver downtown, but amenities are nearby.
As part of the entire HIX chain-wide renovations, the hotel has made an effort at sprucing things up. The lobby is still pretty narrow, but bright and cheery. It appears that they renovated all the bathrooms in the rooms, and while the washroom facilities are basic and standard, they are clean and modern. The shower head was probably the best shower unit that I've experienced for a while.
It's too bad that the rest of the place feels like an 30-year-old budget hotel. The shared basement parking is pretty dingy (though that's not their fault), the elevators are dated (and oddly, occasionally smell like garbage), and the hallways look very, very dreary. Plus, the rooms themselves are still using pre-renovation furniture (and possibly older beds), which makes the room feel rather drab. Some rooms have updated LCD TV's, but most still have the older (large) CRT screens. Most rooms come with a microwave and a fridge/freezer for supermarket items. Rooms either face the SkyTrain, which has noise issues, or the North part of the mall, which is a little dull.
Other services are basic but standard, including pool and fitness facilities. The in-room Internet is free (wireless), but pretty slow. A coin laundry machine is available in the building. The HIX complimentary breakfast is a nice touch, though their hot items are pretty greasy. The cold items (hard-boiled eggs, yoghurt, cereal) are healthy enough, though. But I still don't understand why they use those poor-quality paper plates and plastic cutlery. I guess that they don't want to worry about the logistics of dishwashing.
All that said, there's nothing here that is a deal-breaker for me, and the exceptional location does compensate a lot for this. (Remember, if you're not driving, and want to take the SkyTrain downtown, that public transit gets really busy in the morning and afternoon rush hours.) If you have settled on this general location, I would look at the Holiday Inn Express and the Hilton Metrotown, which are a stone's throw away from each other. Generally, the Holiday Inn Express would provide a better price point (room rate, parking, microwave/fridge, coin laundry), but the Hilton would be a better experience, and occasionally has deals.
If you manage your expectations correctly, the Holiday Inn Express Metrotown is a decent enough spot.
