“A must visit”

We have visited this lodge several times over the years and besides the accommodations the restaurant is second to none. We have been there several times for the Sunday brunch buffet and it rivals many high end restaurants at a very reasonable price. The service and food are fantastic but the view is well worth the visit. The staff are efficient and polite and the food leaves you wanting more.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that overlooks the water, there's nothing better than hearing the water splashing...

This was probably one of the least expensive places we stayed in on our recent trip to Vancouver Island. It was a good-sized room with a great balcony with views over to Quadra Island. We did not come for the fishing (just an overnight stop) on our way north, but judging by the people coming back on the morning we left, they'd all had a good mornings' fishing.

One tip - eat at April Point restaurant rather than Legends, the food is better

Room Tip: The standard with two Queens and ocean view are good value

OK, this place could use some updating, but when you look pasted that, what a great place. Our room had this fantastic view and was so spacious. Beds were very comfortable and all was clean. Loved the Aveda products in the bathroom. No room service.

Great value for fishing trips and our guide, Brian was an excellent fisherman. Boats all around us and we were the only ones catching. Thanks Brian!!!!

Well have never done this so thought what the heck. Did send an email to painters lodge but to date have yet to hear back from them. So late August my wife and I moved to Campbell River. My daughter and son in-law helped us with the move. They worked really hard and I thought a treat fishing trip would be a heck of way to say thanks before we flew them home. We phoned the lodge asked about prices, for 3 of us it came to almost 600.00 which included some overpriced but not to tasty sandwhiches. While on the phone we asked how the fishing has been and were told that was not bad at all. So we booked the trip. The next day we showed up ready to go out on a beautiful day. Before I paid I asked once more how the fishing had been. Was told yet again not bad. So we paid the fee with licences and 2 sandwhiches . it came to just under 600.00 . We headed down to the dock meet our guide, before we got on board the boat, I asked him what the fishing had been like the last few days. He stated worst year he has seen in many years, nobody is catching really anything, maybe the odd brown salmon. For those that don't know a brown salmon is a dog fish, looks like a small shark and according the locals tastes really bad. I then told the guide what we were told on the phone and in person a few minutes before. He just stated that they would not tell what is really going on then their revenue would be down dramaticlly. Well the guide was right we got skunked. We did get to see a pod of killer whales not to far off but even after 3 hours with not even a nibble on our line he did not want to take a 2 or 3 minute trip over so we could get a closer look with the other whale watchers?? We actually spent 90 min in one little spot going around in circles. According to the radio chat on the boat out of the several charters that went out that day only one salmon was caught. Do the math if they are sending out say 20 charters a day. This is not a case of sour grapes. Had the office stated up front that fishing was a little slow or down that perhaps we might be wait a few days it might be a little better. That would have been the honest thing to do. I knew the price, I paid, but painters lodge, if they had some intrgrity should have been up front with me when I phoned and when I showed up to pay. Maybe just if they had said if you wait a couple of days we think it is going to pick up, they chose rather to say ya know it has not been bad at all. Once again an email was sent to Painters lodge last month but they have not bothered to respond. At least our guide was somewhat honest with us even though he did not want to take a couple of minutes to get closer to the whales or at least as close as the folks that gave Painters lodge their money for the whale watching trip.We actuatly headed back to shore a little earlier then what we paid for?? One comment was made off the cuff stating that we paid for a fishing charter not a whale chater. I know that this was a tounge in cheek remark, but just maybe getting a little closer to the orcas would have made our trip worth while.

Room Tip: before you pay for a fishing charter talk with locals if possibe. Then you can at the very least mak...

Stayed one night as part of our British Columbia "Coast/Cariboo" loop tour. Hotel staff was friendly and welcoming at check-in, and equally kind and efficient at our 5:30 a.m. check-out the next morning. We had a lovely waterfront view room ($128 for the night) with high, raw-beam ceilings and a small balcony. The room was very spacious, the beds were perfect with lots of pillows (a huge plus for my elderly dad who needs to sleep propped-up). Though the property could update the paint colors a bit, the resort is inviting with lush landscaping and well-designed layout. It was the last night of our 10-day trip to remote parts of B.C., so we eased back to civilization with their Sunset Sightseeing Yacht Tour. 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., $120 for 2. While enjoying fruit, cheese & wine we cruised north to Seymour Narrows, saw amazing copper cliffs with blue-streaked rock, seals poking their heads up to watch us, and a natural inland waterway with jaw-dropping beauty. There were 8 passengers, 2 outstanding crew and the captain – plenty of room and comfort for all aboard. What a treat, what fun. Chances are excellent we will return soon with the fishermen (and women) in our lives to enjoy more of the recreational opportunities here.

Room Tip: Waterfront view is outstanding, and not noisy. Watch seaplanes take off & land, fishing boats co...

My wife and I have wanted to experience fishing for big chinook in the Tyee Pool at the mouth of Campbell River using the traditional style from a rowed boat. While I could have done it back in the 1970s at the original Painter's, the new Painter's Lodge didn't disappoint.
We fished two sessions or "tides" – once in the late afternoon into the evening, and again early the next morning. Our guide, Dwayne Mustard, gave us a wonderful time as we were able to relive the a bit of the glory days when anglers came from around the world to fish as we had. It isn't a "meat" fishery and merely hooking a fish is a major accomplishment...but we did have a fish hit the first evening. I wish I could say we actually landed the chinook, but after a long spirited fight, it slipped the barbless hook.
We had a lovely stay in the "Robert Amos" room with a lovely balcony overlooking the lodge docks and Discovery Passage. Room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable.
We ate our pub meals outside on the large terrace, but this area was also popular with smokers. We could have also eaten in the main dining room, but we wanted faster service. Vegetarian quinoa burger was really yummy, but nachos for two less successful.
Overall, a fabulous stay with lots to explore in the town of Campbell River. I may not have landed my fish, but my better half trolled up lots of good shopping in town!

Room Tip: Ask for one of the "Artist's" rooms in the Vancouver wing. Great views of Discovery Pa...

Stayed here 3 nites in late August 2012. Had booked a cabin as we wanted the kitchen ammenties. 3 adults! What a joke! One of the 2 burners only worked. As well as the frying pan was probably from the 50's. Not non-stick and worse totally warped. Terrible! You would think that Painters Lodge would realize when people book the cabins one of the primary reasons they are doing so is because they want the usability of a kitchen! I would not stay here again simply because we prefer to stay in a spot where a kitchen facility is not only available but also usuable!

Room Tip: dont stay here if you want a usuable kitchen!
