“An absolute gem.”

We flew to Courtenay for a weekend event not knowing what to expect from this facility. What a surprise! Lovely clean Suite, fully appointed, modern styling, soft cozy beds. This topped by outdoor pool, hot tub, fully equipped fitness room. All this for competitive pricing. Believe me - we will return!

We stayed here a couple years ago and liked it enough to re book. This time stayed a couple nights, Mt Washington is about 40 minute drive and spent a day up there. When are we going to sweep the parking garage floor? Do not put your luggage on the floor before you put it in your car! The Continental breakfast was less then average for a Hotel of the calibre they want to achieve. The flush mechanism on the toilet didn't work very well, water kept running. The drip in the garage from what looks like a sewer pipe is not proper. The TV channels are listed but not subscribed by the hotel. All seems odd?? Less costly options likely better?

My girlfriend and I stayed a night here after a night at the Tigh-Na-Mara in Parksville, and had a very nice experience overall. We enjoyed the hot tub and infrared sauna, and found the suite to be very well equipped (better, from a kitchen perspective, than our previous night stay).

The fitness centre was modest but functional, although some of the machines and equipment were a bit on the dated side. The complimentary continental breakfast was on-par with what you'd find at a similar flagged property, and we found the front desk service to be prompt and courteous. Did not get a chance to visit the outdoor heated pool, but it looked inviting.

Overall, no complaints, we would stay again.

Room Tip: The suites in the building furthest from reception were great if you're seeking a fully-furnishe...

We waited a week before posting this review, in case we received any response to our Guest Comment card which we left at the Front Desk upon check-out. All our contact info was there but, as of this writing, we have heard nothing back from the Hotel. So here goes:

Part of the old “Courtenay Bypass” before the Inland Island Highway was built, the 17th Street Bridge has a metal deck which, due to the constant traffic going over it, produces a constant booming noise audible for blocks in all directions. Unfortunately, the Best Western Plus and the Old House Village Hotel and Spa—two of the city’s larger and better hotels-- are situated as close to this nuisance as possible. We have stayed in both hotels and my first advice is, ask for a room as far away from this ringside seat as possible—or bring a good supply of earplugs.

On the March 1st weekend, my spouse and I stayed at the Old House, as our base for snowshoeing up on Mt. Washington. The Hotel rooms are well-appointed, comfortable, clean and quiet—if you are lucky enough to get one as far to the south end of the property as you can, i.e. away from the Bridge noise. We used the 1-888 Reservations line and were able to book less than a week in advance, for a 3-night weekend stay. We specifically asked for a quiet room. Upon our arrival on Friday afternoon, we again asked for a quiet room, and were assured that the one assigned to us would be quiet.

We were given room 1-302 in the South Building. It was a top-floor, corner 1-bedroom suite, with windows facing northwest to the Main building and southwest over Riverside Lane. The Bridge noise was faint at this location, but the ice/soft drink machines were in an alcove right next to our room. The noise from these machines easily penetrated our kitchen. Fortunately, our bedroom was far enough away to make this a non-issue at night. But this room assignment did not meet our criteria for a quiet room. Perhaps guests can never assume that Hotel staff know what “quiet room” means. To us, it means—at the very least--far away from elevators, and far away from ice/soft drink machines. In the case of this Hotel, we would advise adding two more criteria: far away from the Bridge noise and far away from the Fitness Centre hot tub room, down on the Main floor of our building. The door to the hot tub room opens and closes with a racket--and there are guest rooms nearby.

There were several glitches in our otherwise pleasant stay at this Hotel:

The Guest Book in our room had its “Dining” options section reproduced twice—a waste of paper. The Book also had numerous typos. Does no one proofread this material, which is often a guest’s first exposure to needed information about the hotel and its environs? Plus, nowhere in the Book was there information concerning the fine continental breakfast provided by the Hotel from 7 – 10 a.m., off the hotel Lobby.

My spouse called the Hotel’s Oh Spa in late afternoon on Saturday (the Spa was open until 7 pm), hoping to make a booking. She left a message on their voice recording, but her message was never picked up or returned. This does not strike us as a wise business practice.

On Friday night we discovered two things in our suite: one of the table lamps in the front room had a faulty light switch; and the couch material is impervious to red wine. We discovered both these things while I was struggling with the lamp, knocking over my wine glass in the process. A little water in a paper towel miraculously took care of the wine spill in short order. We were not so lucky with the lamp. We unplugged it and left a note on it for Housekeeping to attend to the next day. Nothing. The lamp was till there on Saturday evening when we returned from Mt. Washington. So we spoke to the Front Desk staff, who promised to advise Maintenance. Nothing. The lamp was still there when we checked out Monday morning.

Apparently Housekeeping does not talk to Maintenance--and the Front Desk does not talk to either of them.

Entry to our building is via hotel room key only—a good security practice. A sign on the outside entrances provides instructions for this. However, there are also signs posted inside the building on the exit doors, telling us: “Hotel room key required for entry”. But readers of these signs are exiting—not entering. The final word on these signs should read, “re-entry”. (Granted, this item probably says more about us than it does about the hotel…but there it is.)

The final item on our shake-one’s-head-in-disbelief list is the phone script imposed on this hotel’s staff. When we called the Front Desk, the attendant chirped, “It’s a great day at the Old House. How may I direct your call?” Seriously? What is this—Walmart? We doubt that it is a "great day” in any business environment when staff are expected to dispense such trite, meaningless slogans. Perhaps something like, “Thanks for calling the Old House; how may I direct your call?” At least it’s honest…

All the above glitches, taken by themselves, are not large issues. But taken together, they point to Management’s lack of attention to detail.

All that being said, no review would be complete without some positives—and there were some things we did appreciate at this hotel. Some examples: We have enjoyed lunches and some dinners at the hotel’s own restaurant, Locals. The continental breakfast, as mentioned above, is a welcome amenity, and the daily newspapers available at the Front Desk for guests to enjoy over breakfast was a nice touch—one attention to detail on the plus side, certainly. In our own suite, the bathroom was clean and bright, with heated tiles and an ergonomic bathtub/shower with a sloped end for reclining, complete with a niche to rest one’s head. The floor-inset hot tub down in the Fitness Centre was a welcome respite after a day on the Mountain. Just steps away from the hot tub is a handy individual sauna booth, and a full bathroom/change area. Towels are provided for guests using this facility, so there is no need to bring towels down from your room.

All in all, we would stay at this hotel again, with some of the caveats about room assignments taken into account. If Management attends to even some of the other glitches we experienced, then it may yet prove to be “a good day at the Old House” for future visitors, after all!

Room Tip: Quiet is best. Ask for one far from: elevators, ice/soft drink machines, Bridge noise, Fitness Centr...

A nice one night stay but no better than "average" all round. Very nice young man on the front desk at check in and a less than friendly front desk lady at 7:00am check out. Just think her personality doesn't suit a hospitality position. Good bed good shower not so good breakfast. They need to get serious about breakfast as is now the "norm"....trying to serve it in the hotel lobby just doesn't work...not comfortable...too amateur, Not unhappy but think $99.00 would be about right for this hotel.

Our trip was meant to be a relaxing spa retreat for a few days. We had an amazing day at the OH Spa on site and the girls there were fabulous. Would highly recommend a massage with Melanie! The staff at the hotel were very helpful recommending places to eat and things to do/see in the area. There were a couple instances when things didn't go as planned, however the hotel was quick to rectify these matters and ensure that we had a wonderful stay! Shout outs to Melanie who ensured we got to Nymph Falls, Vanessa and Eric who were full of suggestions and recommendations, Steven and Suzy for chauffeuring us around Courtenay, and Brad for ensuring that we had a comfortable stay. Would definitely stay again!!

I love having the small kitchen and the continental breakfast in the morning, and being next door to Locals is a real plus. Rooms are very pleasant and spacious, service is good and hotel is quiet. A lovely place to stay for business or pleasure
