“Fossil Hunting is the thing to do”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2012

Here's the deal: Fossil Hunt. The museum is nice for those who are into palentology but little else. Use the museum for FOSSIL HUNTING>Make a reservation through the museum to take one of their fossil hunting trips. You'll be told to arrive early at the museum (before it opens to the public), and given a personalized tour of what you'll potentially find on the Trent River *that's where you'll travel to. (This is enough time inside the museum.) Pat is amazing. He's the head bone guy and he supplies you with all the tools, guidance, where to find fossils, the names of what you find, all of it. It was great and we ended up going to the hardware store, getting tools and now fossil hunt on our own. THANK YOU PAT.

“Interesting but disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

Amazing information about the history of a very unique settlement. Sadly, the displays were poorly lit, there was very little explanation about the mining relics; everything was dusty; the glass showcases were grimy and hard to see. The attendant (on Monday, September 24, roused herself from her phone conversation to take my money. I asked her where to start and she replied, "Wherever you want". She then resumed her phone conversation for the next hour, when I left.

This is an amazing museum with info about a unique community. I wish that Cumberland residents would volunteer two hours a week to restore this amazing resource.

“Fossil Hunting - a great activity”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2012

I have taken my grandkids on the Museum Fossil Hunting activity two years in a row and we've all loved the experience. Pat does a very nice job introducing the museum and it's collection, and giving a mini talk on marine reptiles and the 'fossil' history of the area. You take your own vehicle to the river site, but Pat provides the equipment (goggles, hammer, chisel) and shows everyone what to look for. As we scramble over the rocks on the 'hunt', Pat is available to coach, to offer encouragement, and to identify any 'finds'. It is a great activity for kids and adults!

The museum is great but there isn't as much to see as I would like. Staff aren't always available for questions.

“wow it was great”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 20, 2012

I have gone here every few years with the kids and they really enjoy it as much as I do. The fossil tour is amazing the guy pat was so much fun and so nice, really reasonable prices for the tour and they supply everything. We have gone back to the river many times to fossil hunt after taking the tour.
