We have eaten here once for breakfast and once more recently for lunch, and both times it was barely alright for a quick, no-frills meal. We found the breakfasts to be a good value, and the daily specials to be a good value. The salad I had was not a good value.

I can't help but review the chicken caesar salad, as it was surprisingly disappointing, for a cost of $12.50. The menu states "romaine lettuce, homemade croutons and dressing, with marinated chicken breast, served with garlic toast". The plate of romaine lettuce was really small, lettuce was wilted, the chicken very overcooked and dried out, the garlic toast neither toasty nor garlicky. There were no croutons. If it were a side salad, I would not complain, but this was an entree, with an entree price.

My beverage glass was dirty (some old food stuck on the inside from the dishwasher, perhaps) and we had to ask for utensils after we got our food. The servers were friendly. The atmosphere is fun, with the various license plates on display.

I will probably pass on Plates from now on, which is sad because it seems like it has the potential to be a good independant family restaurant.

Got to love the decor, it is right out of the 50's all licence plates and things automotive. It really is a diner. The food was home made nothing canned and very tasty, but basic. Service was ho-hum. Not friendly, nor rude.
Would go back again for a quick bite.

We stopped at Plates on the way to the airport for a quick bite. Service was good and the menu offered variety but the food was average at best. It wasn't bad but flavor was lacking. Price was fine and it served our purpose before heading to the airport.

This is a well known family style restaurant in Courtenay. Interesting decor with licenses plates all over. I have had breakfast a few times and lunch a few times.
It is very crowded late mornings Sunday. It is open at 7 am on Sunday which I like because I hate waiting for places to open.

Good points:

Good menu selection at reasonable cost. Breakfast has a shortlist for 5 items used to be 5 for 5 but now 5 for 5.50
Great jam preserves with your toast. Had poached eggs ordered medium which means not solid centre but they were slightly overcooked. Hard to find a place which can do poached right.
Had one other time where the order was incorrect but rectified. Food is generally quite good.

Improvement needed:

Most important for breakfast, yah the coffee. Don't wait so long to come around with the pot. What is annoying is seeing the server grab the pot and give everyone in one direction more coffee and forget about you. Never asked how meal was today. May have tipped the normal amount but unfortunately, let's say service was not exceptional not indifferent but room for improvement. This was just after opening so it was not crowded either
