“Almost GREAT!”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

On Saturday after a day of golf, four of us decided to treat ourselves to the Kingfisher's restaurant. It had been years since any of us had eaten there and our memories were of great food. We had a great view and the staff were very friendly and vigilant. The soup of the day was fantastic, as was my steamer of fresh seafood. Our friends had the bread basket, which was enough for three hungry people. They also had the special of the day, which was fresh salmon. My wife ordered the lamb and asked for it to be rare. However when it came it was well done. She informed the waitress, but as we were all famished she decided to eat it as it was. The waitress came back and told her the lamb would be on the house. We thanked her. When we paid the bill however the charge was still on it. We paid it. So the seafood is great but be wary of other menu items.

The resort (newer "condo" accommodation) right on the beach is lovely. The accommodation was nice, although not particularly well laid out, but it was fine for our purposes, since we didn't want to do any cooking or eating in the suite. The dining room service was not especially noteworthy. The food is good, but is quite pricey. We only ate dinner there one night and didn't have breakfast onsite either of the mornings we were there. Although we had made a reservation several weeks in advance for dinner and requested a window table, it didn't happen. We did enjoy the deck off our room though, and utilized it having a couple of glasses of wine, and coffee in the morning. The resort staff were friendly and helpful though.

Room Tip: The newer section right on the beach would be the best location in our opinion.

Attended a wedding on the weekend and got the "special" (only if you book 2 nights) wedding rate, which was way to high for the quality of room I got! (especially as there were guests there paying much less with a spa credit...I felt CHEATED!) Poor lighting, low water-flow shower, stained bathtub, hairdryer sounded like a 747 on take-off. Food was good, but slow, and not a lot of communication by the staff. If there is some major improvements and care and attention put into the place I will go back. The bride and groom were stunning though, and the wedding details they brought to the event overshadowed the tired facility.

Room Tip: If you're not in a beach front room, don't stay!

Took my sweetie here for our anniversary and was looking forward to a nice weekend away. Booked the romance suite, which was beautiful and had a great view of the ocean. Nice jet tub in the room and a handy kitchenette. Room was clean and modern.

Overall, I found the service a little underwhelming and not quite up to the level you would expect from a place charging in this range on the island. Not bad, but not really good either. For example, check in was brisk and explanations were minimal. Had to ask where I can park, no one offered to help with bags. At the hydropath, the staff was pleasant but not really engaged.

On the 2nd night there was a big wedding which was extremely loud (blasting music until 11pm) and we needed to close all windows. Not what you want to do on the beach in August... then there was singing and other general shenanigans until the wee hours. I called the front desk to complain and could only get the voicemail.

The next morning they called to apologize, and offered free brunch. Kudos to the staff for a sincere apology and trying to make it up to us. As other people have mentioned though, the service in the restaurant is spotty.

Thumbs up for the apology and free brunch, but... maybe it's time to decide what kind of resort it's going to be?

Thank you for your review mcioopus. We are thrilled you joined us for your anniversary; the Kingfisher is the perfect spot for such an occasion. Your feedback on our staff service is very helpful and we will be sure to address all departments as our service standards are our top priority.

I am glad to hear our apologize on the wedding noise provided you with good compensation. It is always challenging to meet the needs of all our guests, especially when we have a wedding. Your feedback is being included as we plan our next years wedding packages.

Thank you again for your feedback and we hope you will visit us again!

Sincerely,

Natasha Richardson

I really enjoyed my long weekend stay at the Kingfisher. It was clean, and very relaxing. Reading the reviews, I was a bit concerned about smokers but didn't have any problems. They explained there was a new policy and advise them if we saw anyone break that policy, which we didn't. It was a girls weekend trip, and we all ate the Sunday Brunch at the restaurant which was fabulous. Such a good variety, even for those in our party that had food intolerances. We all enjoyed the spa treatments. One thing to note is that most of the spa treatments were full by the time we arrived, so couldn't book anymore. This was a bit unfortunate, but luckily we had pre-booked a couple of things so were not left without anything. In the future, I would pre-book everything as apparently it is normal to fill up their treatments.

Used the gym which was great (had everything you would need) but no AC so got a bit warm. There are fans and such, but the floor got rather slippery with all the moisture.

Pool, hottub, and steamroom were good. I liked the limited hours for the kids. I chose to go when it was adults only time..

They did have bicycle rentals which one of my frends used, but it would have been really fun if they also had some stand up paddle boards for rent. They have a great bay in front of them, and a SUP would have been fun for everyone in our group!

Room Tip: Get a beachside suite. We were able to use the kitchen ammenities and have our own dinner party in...

Stayed at the Kingfisher Resort for the first time last month.
We vacation for short weekend chill out opportunites on Vancouver Island
whenever time and money permits.

Kingfisher was not cheap by highway Motel standards, but as a resort that you really don't
have to leave for a couple of days at a time, it hits a great bargain price point for us.

We asked and received room tours and that is key. There has been some reinvestment in the
rooms and facilities in the past 5-ten years,(guessing the time frame) but it hasn't been consistent with the entire property yet and some space planning errors have occured in the drawn out renovation. So; short version is; chip in to get a waterfront suite. Ours was called an "Orca Suite" I believe and it was a walk out, right to the waterfront!!! The design and layout of the room was not something one would promote as their own in a Metropolitan Center like NYC, or even Vancouver, but it worked for us. Spacious, all ammenities in full working order and perfect connectivity for our cronic electronic lifestyle!

Kingsize bed and useable mini-kitchen were a bonus for us. We could go about one km. down the road, pick up some organic veggies or some local shrimp and easily throw something together in the room! We were greeted pleasantly each time we crossed paths with a staff member on the property, but never hounded or "tracked" like we've experienced in some other resorts. We felt looked after, but we also felt our privacy was respected. Simple kindness and concern for our comfort was what we experienced from every team member.

The layout of the resort is unique in that we took an elevator from water level to the common courtyard sort of area that all the guests share. A small outdoor pool was on the next level up from our suite, so the entire property is kinda teired like an old theatre and all angles pointed to mother ocean!!-----we chilled out there to a level we barely ever accomplish in our busy lives.

It is a coby, unpolished, and authentically Vanisle property. If you like to be left alone, in the care of subtle staff and simple comforts, than this is one brilliant little resort!! We couldn't have been happier.-------------(doesn't hurt that it is located less than 10kms or so from some of the best single track mountain biking in North America either!!!!!)

We'll be back before the year is out!

In short, the room was basic, warm, and comfortable – but you probably aren’t planning to visit for the hotel room. The real charm of the room is the large balcony and beautiful view. It left me wishing I had more time to sit and soak up the view.

When checking in, the no smoking policy was greatly emphasized. This wasn’t an issue for me and it made the balcony all that more enjoyable.

I also really appreciated the overall layout of the hotel. Although the online pictures of the hotel show the view from the beach, the terraced design of the hotel makes it feel quiet and intimate from each separate level.

The terraced design does have one downside: guests have to walk through the courtyard (rain or shine) to access the spa, restaurant, gym and the rooms closest to the beach. The hotel does provide umbrellas, and as a Vancouverite the rain is easy for me to over look but I would imagine guests not used to the ‘Wet Coast’ might find this off putting.

Of course, the real draw of the Kingfisher is the spa, which demands many return trips. I was also pleased with their restaurant’s view, menu, and quality of food.

Room Tip: Some Ocean view rooms are on the second floor - with no elevator.
