for an ocd germaphobe backpacker, Im kind of hard to please but Cona did just that. Everything is super clean, fresh & bright. We stayed is the large dorm at the top of the outdoor stairs with the slidi.g patio door. All the beds were clean.. no beat up bed frames/hole filled sheets/mystery boogers on the walls. We had our own nice clean bathroom but the shared ones were nice too - very clean and actually really nice tiles. The staff were super friendly (one of the owners popped his head in our open patio door to say hi & invited us to a bbq!), prices are great & it's beautiful beside the river on a side street :) Thanks so much for having us & the girls will be back every year for the race!

Spent a night at the Cona Hostel in Courtenay since it was a convenient place to stay while we were in town to catch a show at the nearby Sid Williams Theater. It was as clean as you could ask for, and the staff was welcoming and attentive. I found the concrete floor in the kitchen/common area to be uncomfortable, but maybe I've been spoiled by staying at truly fantastic hostels in the course of my travels, and that's just nit-picking.

The location was absolutely perfect - close to stores, restaurants, and coffee shops, and the oh-so-important (for this visit anyways) theater.

This was our third trip to Courtenay, BC where we stayed at The Cona Hostel. Perfectly situated for families visiting with or without a car...a couple of minutes from the main shopping street, coffee shops, parks, indoor skateboard park, tennis courts, kayak rentals, and it hangs (literally) over the river by the 5th Street Bridge. Shuttle will take you to Mt Washington summer or winter (extra fee). Highlights for our family...the 4 loaner inner tubes for an awesome float down the river, pulling-in right under the bridge. We ate dinner on the hostel porch and watched seals eating salmon in the river at full tide (the hostel is situated a km or so from the mouth of the river) and then our boys joined them and local kids by jumping off the wall and into the river.
The family suite can sleep 8 if you're ok with being cosy. Well-equipped kitchen, though no table. We ate at the coffee table or outside on the picnic table. For a big group though in less than ideal weather, this wouldn't be ideal...but you can use the big table in the shared area downstairs. The living area feels like it needs a little TLC but it's clean. Big TV and DVD player (a library of DVDs available downstairs) as well as foosball table, shared computer (albeit old and slooow) but there's wi-fi throughout.
Surprised on Saturday night to find that there's a nightclub a stone's throw away and we could hear a lot of thumping techno and the usual after-hours racket for a while.
Have also stayed in the dorm bunks and they're great. Co-ed bathroom/shower rooms (fully-enclosed stalls). Fabulously clean and nice touches...big slate tiles, reclaimed wood floors, window looking over the bridge. Did I say clean?! Lockers available for day-use. Friendly and welcoming staff!

Room Tip: If it's really hot, a north-east facing dorm overlooking the river is cooler. The suite with kit...

Had 2 nights at the Cona Hostel in Courtenay. Originally we had planned on camping but left it too late to book a spot over the long weekend, we found this place as an alternative.

The location was pretty good right along side the river overlooking a park, walking distance to pubs, cafes and grocery store all pretty much on the same Main St. I noticed on the Cona website that Main St was trendy. I think maybe I'm not trendy enough to know what trendy looks like!

We stayed in a private room and were lucky enough to be on the top floor all to ourselves including bathroom and kitchen, I think they have this set up for larger groups. It was very clean and the kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans utensils and cups. The bathroom was very clean also.

The bedroom was big enough and the bed was pretty standard for hostels, thin foam mattress atop a slat base, bedding was provided. It was comfortable enough. I had a brief look at one of the dorms which seemed a decent size with bunk beds (also with bedding provided). The shared bathroom looked clean too, although I had the fortune of a private bathroom.

We only dealt with one staff member Thom who was really friendly and helpful, he gave us local information and was nice and relaxed.

I guess the only downside to this place was the internet. I found it REALLY slow and the wireless connection dropped out all the time, perhaps there were a lot of people on at the same time, even so, it was annoying to try and plan activities. It would be great to see the owners splurge on a better connection and a better wireless router. (what a whinger I am!)

Overall a good clean hostel and the price was fair. Close enough to the surrounding attractions and nice people working there.

Room Tip: See if the private rooms on the top floor are free

The Cona hostel is one of the best set up hostels i've ever stayed in. It's great for solo travellers - you walk straight into the cosy lounge and the best stocked kitchen i've ever seen. It's a welcoming, friendly place and the hosts are also full of information on local activities and hiking routes in the must-see Strathcona Provincial Park. The building itself is impressive - an old wooden meandering house just renovated and spotlessly clean, perched on the edge of the river at the edge of town. Courtenay is great too, got a real holiday feel without being a touristy place. You can go for a swim in the tree-lined river, chill out in funky cafes, then go back to the Cona for a high-spec shower!
