Having enjoyed the cuisine at Locals in their previous location, I was hopeful for an enjoyable experience in the new, much nicer setting. I was not disappointed! Menu naturally features local producers in dishes which are beautifully prepared. Certainly a good choice for showcasing what the Comox Valley and locavore food movement have to offer!

We have long been hooked on the food, service and overall experience of eating at Locals. We visit two to three times a year while on vacation from Calgary, always making sure we ride our bikes to enjoy date night at Locals.

Now in their "new old location" - a romantic and unbelievably gorgeous 'old house' located right off of the river pathway, date might is getting even better.

We typically have the 3 course meal for its value and consistently amazing taste. I rarely see someone put so much effort into the presentation and preparation of little fresh vegetables, all carefully roasted and prepared and then joined just right on the plate. Th chef must fuss over each one. Last night's main : tenderloin pasta in a beautiful sauce with mushrooms (freshest most tender in the valley) and a halibut that must have jumped happily from the ocean a few hours prior. Loved the salads and deserts, wine, server, everything. We were sitting in this very little room almost 18 years ago on our first trip to the valley - this is like coming home for us.

If you miss this restaurant you'll be missing something very special. One of my favourites of all time for all around romantic date nights.

My family has visited Locals many times. We have always enjoyed the food and our time out. We have found it to be a bit expensive but usually worth it. If we were enjoying a meal on the French Rivera at the Ritz I would be OK with spending that type of money, but we are not. Most people I speak too about this place find it to way out of their price range. On our most recent outing to Locals we ordered a lot of food from the menu. It was all incredibly well presented, but with one unquestionable flaw. None of the food had any taste. Perhaps this is the style of their take on French cuisine. But it seemed to us all after this meal that this restaurant was geared for older people who have lost their sense of taste.

The food was tasty, fresh, and generously portioned. Service was friendly and efficient. It did seem to be a little longer than necessary between courses, but with ten people ordering different things that's probably not surprising.

... in fact, the experience was SO good, that I'll come back to Courtenay specifically for the chance to enjoy this restaurant again. It's my kind of place, where the chef seems to revere the ingredients so much that his preparations are simply genius in how he makes the fish or the meat or the veggies shine. Too often, chefs are either so bent on showing off their skill and/or hiding substandard raw products, that the ingredients are unidentifiable. Not this chef. He is very well-suited for the Comox Valley, where there is so much good local product to work with. Despite serving top-quality products, Locals is also reasonably-priced and especially through the Galloping Gourmet option, offering of three courses for $35 that suited me -- a single diner -- very nicely. Wine pairings, in half or full glasses, were also available at good prices.

The highlight of it all was the grilled halibut (simply seasoned but imbued with a subtle and delicious smokiness) over a tasty risotto alongside a cornucopia of summer veggies. Wonderful.

The dining room with exposed heavy timber beams, paned windows and squeaky wood floors is cozy and classic, looking out over lovely gardens and the river.

Service was beyond reproach (although the waitress let slip late into the meal that it was her first night on the job) from the warm welcome by name (I suppose there weren't many single women calling in reservations for 7:30) until the end of the meal.

Can't wait to come back.
