“Feel like a member of the family here”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2011

We stayed here on the last weekend in January. The lodge is very comfortable and the rooms were as well. Lori and Ken are great people that make you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. Sure the price is a little more than some of the surrounding accomodations but you get a nice hearty, all you can eat breakfast, lunch and cookies and beverages. The lights are dimmed in the evening but it fit the relaxing atmosphere. The fire in the stone fireplace was always cheerful to see after skiing or coming back after dinner. Our room was cleaned every day until I asked them not to. I'm a firm believer in minimalism to conserve. I don't need clean towels everyday. I don't need more cleaning products used everyday. Every little bit of conservation helps the planet!
Lori is a veritable encyclopedia of local lore. Just ask her and she'll be right there to help you out. This place is top notch without being over the top. If you want bargain basement deals this in NOT the place for you. If you want to feel like you are in a nice CLEAN establishment with good company this IS the place for you. Thank you Lori and Ken for a great weekend in the mountains.

On a recent ski trip to Kicking Horse, we stayed four nights at the Vagabond Lodge. It is a delightful lodge, the food was great and Ken and Lori's warm hospitality was wonderful. We would recommend it without any hesitation.

This was our first time to Canada. I had pre booked the Vagabond Lodge as it looked lovely – and I liked the reviews. Having spent time travelling from Vancouver – over to Vancover Island, and back, we decided to head up to Golden early as we were unsure of the road conditions. They weren’t bad – and certainly not as bad as we expected. We managed Hope – Golden in one day. So I rang the Vagabond and asked if we could pitch up 3 days early.

This was not a problem – and boy are we glad we did.

The place was beautiful Kicking Horse resort is fantastic – the views are spectacular as soon as you arrive.

Lori and Ken welcomed us with open arms. The hotel, is small and cosy – and everything has been well thought out – the heated floor in the bathroom, on a timer – and everything finished to the highest quality. The furniture, the fixtures and fittings. Our room was fantastic – plenty of closet space – how nice it was to be able to unpack after 6 days of travelling. The bed was soo comfy, Lori has furnished all the rooms with high quality bedding, as she has the whole hotel.

Ken and Lori are amazing – they try to ensure that you have a great time – helping out where ever they can with info on the activities that are available, and helping with booking if you need it.

Breakfast and lunch are included in the price. There was always a fresh selection of cookies, muffins, Oatmeal (porridge to us Brits). Every day there was something different on offer – and every day fresh.

Cookies and cakes – fresh tea and coffee are available all day long. Lunch would be a selection of meat, cheeses, salads, gorgeous (and well needed) home made soups. And if you want to know the recipe – Lori is always willing to let you know, she shares the cooking with here trusted helper Annette

Of an evening – Lori doesn’t compete with the local hotels/ pub – there is a wide variety of restaurants and pubs, all of which were good. There is no licence – so you bring your own booze – which was great!!! The local store stocks a good range of everything – and is regulated so the prices are reasonable.

The only downside to our stay – the restaurant at the top of the mountain had had a flood and was closed – it reopened on the last day we were there. Which was a shame as Fri & Sat ( I think) they’re open for food some evenings – other wise they shut around 6. The food is good up there – as are the cocktails. I can’t wait to go back and go up there in the evening.

Our five days in Kicking Horse were out of this world – the skiing, the walking, we even managed a very eventful ski-doo day - followed by a long soak in the hot tub - very necessary!!!. We will definitely return. We left on Christmas eve to head off to Emerald Lake, which was nice – but I would have preferred to stay at Vagabond! Well worth the trip! I have recommended this place to loads of people, and look forward to going back…. Maybe next year!!!!

I went with my wife who wrote the previous report, but wanted to add a couple of things of my own.

The pub - Highland Lodge - which is just a short staggering distance from the lodge served good food with great beer and wine. Also, although Lori has no obligation to do so, she clued us in into somewhere we would have never have gone - the Moberley pub, which is a short drive away from the lodge (sorry talking Canadian short drive now, so might be a little more than you think) and had the most fabulous burger and hot wings there - and the bonus is that Lori drove us in her own vehicle as well - what a star she is.

On our last night, all the eateries on the hill were closed in preparation for the ski season, so Ken and Lori laid on a fabulous dinner for us and the other guests, conversation flowed and a good time was had by all.

Would we go back??? Absolutley, and I can't wait to do so!!!!!!

wow! found this place on an internet search from the UK and what a find!
Ken & Lori with Helen the dog greeted us warmly and instantly we felt at home. The room with a window seat and view of the woods was lovely but the bed with the soft feather topper was superb (so much so that i scarcely wanted to get up) however as one previous guest had said the breakfasts and the area were worth the effort of getting out in a morning.
Breakfast is all home made and varies each day with scones and pancakes and all good things. The conversation is always cheery and there were helpful tips on what to do.
Go and see Boo the Grizzly Bear in his refuge on the mountain, that is a truly "awesome" experience if you manage to catch him out and about. The view from the top of the gondola is also good and lunch there after our 10k hike down the hill (we rode back up) was worth the effort.
i can't wait to get back there for skiing but that will have to wait for another year.
We hope we have found some lifelong friends at the lodge, we met interesting people travelling through as well, we will be back there'll be no stopping us now (sorry)
The only shame is that it was so good we have to say so, otherwise it could just be our secret - just be careful who you tell

Booked this lodge on the web. Highly recommended and we can see why. Gracious and helpful hosts Lori and Ken had the place built and now own and run it. Lovely rooms, fridge downstairs for guests, also an honour bar. Great suggestions re restaurants (Cork next door was awesome) and hikes. Ken is most obliging with slides shows and directions. Short walk to the gondola up to the Kicking Horse Ski resort; high alpine and has a fabulous restaurant; the Eagle's Eye. Breakfasts at the Vagabond include homemade scones, oatmeal, egg, homemade bread, fruit etc. Cookies and fruit, hot beverages available on a self-serve basis all day. The hot tub with mountain view and robes were great too!!

My husband and I stayed at the Vagabond Lodge for 4 nights. Our king room was very spacious, quiet, and clean and offered a beautiful view of the mountains. Breakfast every morning was absolutely delicious! Lori's scones were absolutely amazing, and Ken's homemade bread was quite excellent. Other breakfast choices included homemade oatmeal, fruit salad, pancakes, cereal, eggs, and canadian bacon. Coffee, hot tea, and water are available throughout the day. A guest refrigerator was also available for any dinner leftovers/hikers lunch storage as well

One reviewer complained that this lodge was too far from Golden; I beg to differ. The lodge is located on top of a mountain about 10 minutes or less from Golden, but this is part of it's appeal! It's away from all of the tourists. Because it is located at the Kicking Horse Resort, there are many restaurants to choose from which are located about 50 yards away from the B&B. Our only (tiny) discomfort while staying was the lack of AC in the room at night. Golden was going through a small heat wave while we were in the area, so it was a little warm in the room while trying to sleep. However, the windows did open, and the room did have an oscillating fan.

Lori and Ken know the area quite well and were able to recommend several adventures while we were in the area (beautiful hiking locations, whitewater rafting etc.). They made us feel like we were guests in their home rather than guests at a hotel.

If you are looking for a delightful bed and breakfast away from the touristy area of Banff, I highly recommend The Vagabond Lodge!
