Super 8 Merritt BC

Reviewed April 21, 2012

My friends and I went down to Merritt for a volleyball tournament and we all booked at the Super 8. My room was great, brand new and updated. It was in very good condition, and I can't complain at all. However, after looking in the rooms that my friends occupied, I was surprised to see that they were not the same as ours. They were old, out-dated and cramped. If you book at the Super 8, make sure you ask for one of the newly renovated rooms!

Also, when we were there, we noticed that the stair railings were not safe at all, and the next morning when we woke up, we saw that they had fallen down.

The breakfast included muffins, hard-boiled eggs and cereal with juice.

Room Tip: Make sure that you ask for a newly renovated room!

Stayed overnight, had a great room, comfortable bed, microwave and fridge. Hot tub and pool, with a very nice continental breakfast for a very reasonable price.

After ten hours on the road, I found the idea of overnighting at a Kamloops motel depressing: they're either sleazy or a stone's throw from the noisy Trans-Canada highway. I was very pleased when, after catching a bite in Kamloops and getting back on the road for another hour, I pulled into this little motel in Merritt. It is everything I want from this hotel chain: consistently clean, with a courteous staff (I don't need fancy). Even better, it was in a much quieter location, and $10 less expensive than it's Kamloops counterpart.

I will make it a habit to stop in Merritt rather than Kamloops when doing my run to the coast

Had a great stay. The staff was amazingly helpful. The rooms were very clean. I even went as far as to take all the sheets & blankets off the bed & do my own inspection for any four legged 'friends' that may be cohabitating in the bed! And....nothing! Very, very clean! Only complaint is that the continental breakfast room opens at 7am. We left on our last day at 6:30 so were unable to get in for a bite to eat! My only other complaint was that you can't make collect calls from the rooms. I was told by the owner that direct calls were "VERY CHEAP"! Well I guess $1/minute is cheap to him? I paid $12 for a 10 minute long distance call within the province! I suggest using your cell phone or going to a pay phone if you're going to call long distance! All in all affordable, clean, quiet and friendly! Would definitely stay again.

This was a very nice hotel. It wasn`t far off the main highway, was clean and fairly modern. The staff were very friendly. The added convenience of a restaurant on the same property was great. The contintental breakfast was the very basic, but it was included. Room prices were very reasonable. Would stay again.

Merritt is a one-night-stay "way station" overnight stop for Albertans on their way to the BC coast and the Okanagan Valley. You're looking for a place to crash for the night and not much more.

You may want to avoid Merritt in the summer if the forest fire situation is bad and if you bump in to the Merritt Mountain Music Festival. (Check when you reserve).

Front desk on check-in were courteous and capable; they had our reservation. Computer was down but arrangements were made to process our credit card. On check-out all the credit card paperwork was ready.

When reserving, ask for a room at the back (away from the street, or higher numbers) of the floor you are on. The motel is built in to the side of a hill. With luck you can park up the hill on the parking lot quite close to the balcony on the end of your floor to access your room without negotiating stairs.

The room is spacious with one queen bed. For families travelling it is nice to see a bar fridge and microwave. The coffee maker was stocked with decaf coffee (rare) but no tea.

Room looked clean, carpet in good shape. But there were a few dust bunnies in corners, and some shards of broken china in a corner behind a bed-side table.

Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was in good shape (motel was new in the 1990's, mostly original fixtures).

Windows do not open but the air conditioner isn't excruciatingly loud either.

Wireless Internet worked seamlessly.

Continental breakfast is more than the minimum donuts and coffee; it has cereal, muffins, etc. but no protein. It is nice to see "real" orange juice and a bowl of fruit.

Did not use the pool this time but have in the past. It is indoors, normal hotel size (which is to say small) and has a nice hot tub. There is no water slide like the Ramada next door.

All in all, the Super 8 is a cut below the Ramada next door, but at $95 plus taxes it is about $15 cheaper too.

Room Tip: At the back of each level, walk on from the sloped parking lot.
