“Loved our room”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

We stayed in the ladybird suite and it was so nice. Hardwood floor and a king size bed as well as a queen sized one (we didn't need both). The bathroom was beautiful. It was large and clean and had an amazing shower. The air conditioning was much appreciated and worked well. The only complaint was because it was a corner suite it was a little noisy with cars going by but we expected this. The hotel location was perfect and you could walk everywhere. The parking is tight and lacking and once you get a spot you don't dare leave it. There was a parking garage right beside the hotel with reasonable rates. We walked to the lake and all the restaurants. The included breakfast was great although the service was a little slow. Would stay here again.

Liked the 4th floor reno's - our room was cozy but clean and well arranged
Liked the flat screen tv, king bed, natural toiletries, and the pending arch-shaped shower curtain rod!
Disliked Meriam at front desk - sarcastic/superficial laugh whenever we asked a question she felt she was about to answer. Didn't appreciate that upon arrival.
Disliked the unattentiveness when asking for more toiletries from front desk and yet somehow all 4 employees couldn't answer me on how to get more sent up. I waited over an hour for this to be resolved.
Liked the hot breakfast every morning - a great inclusive to add to people's stay, however did not enjoy attitude from Natalie as she seemed very impatient at the start of her day and simply 'no's' said to a lot of inquiries we had. Everyone has a bad day, but hers just started at 8 am.
Disliked the absolute non-view from our room, facing a brick wall.
Trouble sleeping from constant noise from pub/nightclub and outside drunk people. To be expected from an old building, but more isolation would go a long way in better reviews from people. Though heritage, there are ways to better manage noise problems.
Easy walking to baker street and most anywhere one wishes to travel.
Overall - an enjoyable stay
This hotel needs to consider a hot tub/pool - serious request!

Room Tip: 4th floor rooms are most renovated, best view room would be the juliette room. Rapunzel room is abov...

My goal is to be unbiased and fair; things happen.

I had made a reservation on Sept. 9th for an upcoming family wedding for the weekend of Oct. 11th & 12th. I promptly received a confirmation email however I did not see that the dates were incorrect; MY FAULT. Unknowingly, we arrived in Nelson on Oct. 11th, after a 5.5 hr. drive, excited to spend the weekend with our family, who had traveled from all over Canada and who were also all staying at The Hume, to no rooms available.

My husband returned to the car to inform me that we did not have a reservation and that the hotel had been expecting us the weekend before (Oct. 4th (2 nights). I know I had clearly made the reservation for the weekend of the wedding because I specifically mentioned the 10% discount that was being offered for guests staying the wknd of the wedding (Oct. 11th & 12th). Why would the discount be offered the wknd before the wedding? Bottom line, yes, I did not catch the incorrect dates, but I did not appreciate the Manager implying I had probably booked the wrong dates, when clearly the person who booked me did so incorrectly when the 10% was for Oct. 11th & 12th under a specific parties name, the actual wedding weekend. Also, according to the Hume Hotel's cancellation policy on my confirmation email, we should have been charged 100% for one of the two nights for not showing up. If that would have taken place, we would have been alerted to the mistake almost a week ahead of time, giving us and reservations, the ability to correct the matter.

Regardless, the front desk staff (manager I believe) did find us a room for one night at The Hume but could not guarantee anything for the next night. Our compensation was another 10% off the original 10% we were suppose to receive for booking under the wedding. Truthfully, the $90.00 we paid for the heritage room would be the maximum I would normally expect to pay, especially being over the bar/pub. It really wasn't worth more than that.

After securing a room for at least one night, we then had to battle the parking situation. It would have been nice to be pre-warned prior to arrival that The Hume's parking is extremely limited but that there is a parkade next door that is not affiliated with hotel providing easy access to the hotel at a very reasonable cost. After arriving on a busy Friday night of a long weekend, to not only deal with the reservation mess up, to then try and a figure out where to park in the dark in a strange town was frustrating.

Aside from it all, the Manager did call The New Grand Hotel, which was a couple blocks away, to ask if they could hold us a room as a back up for the next night. The Hume Hotel explained there could be a cancellation for the 2nd night and we may have the chance to stay. Unfortunately that never happened and we had to move two hours before the ceremony. Things could have been worse; we didn't have to sleep in our truck.

After getting settled into our room at The Hume, we made our way downstairs to The General Store for a late dinner. The server mentioned he had overheard what had happened to our reservation and was very empathic, trying to reassure us that things would get sorted out, and if it didn't have anywhere to go, we could come stay with him and his family.

Will...you made our night! Not only were you attentive, you were genuine and positive; thank you! Even coming to say 'hi' the next morning at our breakfast table to check on us was very nice. You are what will make us give The Hume Hotel another try.

So all in all, even with the mix up, the staff DID try, although they did not take ownership in their mistake and I do not feel the 20% off for that particular room was a good enough comp, we took what was offered because we were stuck and tired.

Overall, the character, the location and choice of restaurants, which by the way puts out insanely amazing food, and Will, are what will get us to come back and recommend it to others, with the catch of warning folks to triple check their reservation.

By the way, I heard the deluxe rooms were beautiful.

Room Tip: Any room that is away from the pub/bar.

Hi Noelle. Your review is fair. It was me who was dealing with you guys on that particular night. Again, we apologize that the reservation was not made for the proper weekend. We did all that we could to make the unfortunate situation more manageable for you guys. I could definitely tell that you were tired after a day of travel and that this was the last thing you needed.

Parking is very limited at the Hume. We have a small lot but it is free until 9am on any of the meters in the city surrounding the hotel. We are also lucky to be located right next to the City Parkade which offers very affordable overnight parking.

I will be sure to share your comments with Will. We are proud to have him on staff and I'm glad that you at least enjoyed your restaurant experience. The next time you come to town, please give me a personal heads up and I will be sure to offer you and your family a free upgrade.

This hotel was built in 1895 but was closed by the beginning of the present century, having apparently been allowed to go very much downhill. However, if has been extensively and sympathetically renovated - so well, indeed, that it is easy to believe that you are occupying an 1890s hotel that has been carefully preserved.

There are several restaurants, although the menu is similar in each so far as I could see. And, wonder of wonders, the hotel sold excellent beer, most of it from the local Nelson Brewery. Indeed, the hotel has a separate pub (Mike's) in its building.

Room Tip: The "heritage" rooms are, as the name implies, of an older style and are not all that comf...

We stayed in one of the heritage rooms that had not been renovated. In hindsite we should have chosen a more updated room. The bathroom was clean and bright but the door was about 4" short of meeting the floor. Nice to have a window that opened too cool the room off. Queen size bed was good but the pillows were a bit hard and thin.We could also hear the guests overhead walking in their room. Good location for walking around town

I definitely would have to agree that it is worth it to pay the $20 extra for a newly renovated deluxe room. Between October and the end of June that is all the upgrade costs and we have really addressed some of the issues that you may have experienced in a Heritage Room.

Thanks for staying with us.

We stayed three nights, in one of the newly renovated rooms on the 4th floor, and loved the hotel. It's easy to find, and central to the downtown shops, restaurants, and services, so it's a great base for those wanting to explore the town. The floors are undulating, in keeping with the age of the place, and the elevator is tiny and may not line up perfectly with the destination floor, but this is all part of the place's charm, as are the amazing ceilings and other architectural details throughout.

The same menu is offered in all four dining establishments, so you can choose your atmosphere. We experienced lively and sports-minded in Mike's Pub, mellow and jazzy in the Library Lounge, and family-friendly in the General Store (for breakfast). We didn't visit the SpiritBar nightclub, though we heard good things about it.

If you prefer, you can opt out of daily housekeeping, and receive a $5 gift card for use in any of the in-house dining establishments. We enjoyed a couple of free beers this way. We would definitely stay here again, and would recommend the Hume to anyone (though those in wheelchairs might find access a bit challenging).

Room Tip: Stay as high up in the place as you can, to reduce noise from the in-house pub on the second floor.

We spent two nights at this excellent heritage hotel, built in 1895 and recently renovated superbly (get a deluxe room on the 4th floor!)

Location is excellent for exploring this fine historic town. The hotel features excellent restaurants and a great pub.

Thanks for trying out this old place. We definitely offer a unique experience, unlike most other hotels around there. Sounds like you were able to check out our lively pub, intimate lounge and obviously the family restaurant where we serve the complimentary breakfasts. Next time here you will have to check out some great live music in our basement entertainment venue.

We appreciate your business. Come back again.
