“Noisy Night in Nelson”
Reviewed March 30, 2013 via mobile

All but one thing about this hotel is excellent. The location is great, downtown near many restaurants. The hotel is an old classic and renovated rooms are large, with comfortable beds. A good hot breakfast is included with the room price. The bad is noise. Our room was poorly sound-proofed and a rowdy group of drunk guests wandered the halls through the night, repeatedly awakening us. Although staff were responsive to our concerns, they were unable to correct the situation. On top of that a nearby night club spilled bass music into our room late in the night (morning). Sleep is central to what a hotel needs to facilitate and here the Hume failed.

One of the things that we contend with on weekends can be noise. With a popular pub and nightclub and our downtown location, we simply can't guarantee quiet, especially on weekends. It is certainly much quieter when our nightclub is closed usually Sunday to Thursday evenings. With our recent renovation, we have made great improvements to sound proofing with new windows and better insulation.

We are very up front with our guests about this when they make reservations and at check-in. If guests may think it will be a problem, we always recommend the Best Western Plus Baker Street Inn which is only three blocks away on Baker Street and it does not have a pub or nightclub.

Thanks for highlighting many of the great things about the Hume Hotel as well. Again we are sorry if you were kept up. We certainly do not condone people partying in their rooms at night keeping other guests awake.

Excellent stay- we knew as soon as we walked into the very cool historic lobby that we wanted to stay here. We stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms on the fourth floor which was beautiful, if slightly hot at night. We were there with our 7 month old, and the staff was very accommodating. The breakfast downstairs was included in our stay and excellent. The pulled pork eggs benedict was far and above what I was expecting for a free breakfast. Would definitely stay again.

Very pleasant environment, friendly staff, excellent food and atmosphere at the Library. Can be noisy if you stay above the patio; also the walls appears to be poorly insulated. Overall, a good experience.

Room Tip: Rooms above the patio are noisier.

We were in a renovated room. The beds were super comfortable and the bathroom very modern. We loved the view of the mountains and river. We couldn't have hoped for better. Seven of us had beer and dinner downstairs in Mike's and I recommend this too. The feel is local, historical and fun.

We just celebrated our 115th birthday on St.Patrick's Day. As part of the celebrations we opened up the whole fourth floor and invited locals and visitors alike to come and tour the changes up there. It was very rewarding to hear all of the wonderful comments. Some of the locals said they wanted to live up there! Thanks for your excellent review of this heritage, character property.

We booked the room a night before due to changed travel plans. Having read about the possible noise in the rooms that were lower, we opted for a deluxe King room facing inside. It was on the fourth floor, and truly quiet.
The room and service were impeccapble.
The breakfast (and the dinner that we also ate at the Hume) were more "average".

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper, do pay the extra for an inside-facing room on the 4th floor.

We stayed at the Hume on a Saturday night in Feb 2013. We were advised on check-in that there was a bar and nightclub in the hotel, but on the 3rd floor it should be quiet. It was not.

The room is very comfortable, big soft bed and shag carpet. The TV was a fuzzy old CRT model. Unfortunately there was no way to adjust the heating other than opening a window out to the large kitchen extractor fans in the car park. Not a place to stay if you want a good night sleep, especially on a Saturday,

The room was very clean, the shower pressure was amazing and the breakfast was great. Staff were very friendly, and there was room to park our SUV in the free parking beside the hotel. Mikes Bar (in the hotel) was a great pub to watch the hockey.

Room Tip: Our room mentioned it was Heritage Room - maybe there are some modern rooms in the hotel with adjust...

Sorry we weren't able to exceed your expectations a bit more. It sounds as though there were many things that you enjoyed about the hotel.

We apologize that you found it noisy. We always let people know that we can't guarantee quiet rooms on weekends.

As far as the heat goes, you could have simply turned off the heat by shutting the steam radiator dial off. It is an old system but part of the charm. Even opening the window in the middle of winter would have cooled it down within one minute.

We hope that you give us another try. You will have to try out one of the newly renovated fourth floor rooms next time. They are quieter and have thermostat controls which makes maintaining the room temperature much easier. By summer, the room that you stayed in will already be completely renovated so we should not have these types of issues any more.

Thanks for your review.
