The lodging was equal to the old college fraternity days. For this type of price, customers should experience a little nicer accommodations. The skiing wasn’t bad. But there are many great skiing options in the area with more to offer.

The Baldface reputation of arrogance proceeds them. I went to Baldface with a co-ed group of boarders and skiers this year. And, exactly what people say about this place happened to us, the staffs “ski snobbish” attitude ruined our trip. Our guide was a salty older ski snob named Terry. He was vocally and visually frustrated with some people in our group because not everyone could ski as well as him. We booked the entire cat, and no one else that was paying for the trip minded obviously, as we are all friends. Our weaker skiers/boarders can ski anything in bounds. They simply needed a few pointers on how to navigate the steep powder in the trees. But instead of help, they got scolded and embarrassed. Then when we confronted his superiors, they were equally arrogant about the situation.
If you do make the mistake of going to Baldface, make sure you don’t get Terry as a guide.

While I have not participated in many cat skiing operations, this organization worked hard to make everyone feel comfortable and provide a great experience. The guides were knowledgeable and exuded confidence, the accommodations were very good, and food was great.
As to the skiing/riding, this organization has over 36,000 acres of wonderful terrain.

They have the experience nailed.

You're looking at this because you want to ride/ski - so that first. Our guides and cat-driver were the perfect blend of fun and competent (fun when all's well, but right beneath the surface, very competent about dangers and keeping an eye on everyone). The terrain was steep and varied - Wide open bowls, tight trees, cliffs, whoopties. All untracked powder. We caught a stretch of bluebird days that were cold and clear. As a result, the snow was stable and as light as I've experienced in the Rockies (UT/CO). The terrain, particularly the trees, were great for riding but seemed a bit more challenging for skiers.

The lodge has a reputation as catering to riders (one of the reasons we choose it). We didn't have a lot of leg-burning traverses and the cat roads were all close to the end of the hill, so post-holing to the road was never necessary. We were in the cat from about 8:30 to 3pm. and were getting around +/-10,000 feet per day on average. The cat ride was efficient with as little time wasted launching and loading as needed. The cats carry 12 guests plus a lead and tail guide. At first, that seemed like a lot of people, but even going dead last, we had no problem finding untracked, awesome lines all the way down.

The food was fantastic. Hearty breakfasts, great pack lunches to eat on the cats and wonderful dinners. They have a comfortable bar area with a pool table, ping pong and wood burning stove. Good local beer selection. They also have a corner full of guitars to plink about on.

Staff was great. They work well as a team and do a great job making sure everyone feels at home. They all (all!) give off a really positive vibe and it makes the whole experience great. We did not come across a single person there who wasn't smiling and willing to help out with whatever you needed.

They offer ski and snowboard rentals. They had a LOT of boards to try - as in hundreds. Skis were a little more limited. You'll need your own boots.

One thing you pick up on pretty quickly is that they have a dedicated following of folks who return every year. Over 1/2 of the folks who arrived on our 3-day trip were returners. That says a lot to me.

Yes, it's expensive but it's a trip of a lifetime. You should do this.

From start to finish, Baldface is the ultimate ski trip.

First, the skiing. Every single run is the best run of your life. Waist deep at worst, big open bowls, plenty of cliffs for those so inclined, amazing glades, everything you want and as big as you want to go while still being accessible for everyday powder enthusiast. One day we took one run that was icy and sunbaked and the guides were so apologetic and felt so bad. I found this amusing, but it speaks for how good every run normally is. The guides were also supremely professional and made us feel very safe from start to finish. They hadn't even gotten much new snow recently when we visited, so I imagine at times it's even deeper..which is frankly hard to imagine. I've skied all over and this is as good as it gets.

The experience is top notch when you're not skiing too. Fabulous food, great wines and beer, and a really fun house party atmosphere of laid back folks having fun every night. They might even have a big block of ice specially cut for taking shots through late at night...though that detail is slightly fuzzy. The accommodations were great too, very comfortable beds in our private chalet just a 30 second walk from the main lodge.

It's not particularly easy to get to, but most places this good aren't. Go as soon as you can, it's that good.
