From start to finish, Baldface is the ultimate ski trip.

First, the skiing. Every single run is the best run of your life. Waist deep at worst, big open bowls, plenty of cliffs for those so inclined, amazing glades, everything you want and as big as you want to go while still being accessible for everyday powder enthusiast. One day we took one run that was icy and sunbaked and the guides were so apologetic and felt so bad. I found this amusing, but it speaks for how good every run normally is. The guides were also supremely professional and made us feel very safe from start to finish. They hadn't even gotten much new snow recently when we visited, so I imagine at times it's even deeper..which is frankly hard to imagine. I've skied all over and this is as good as it gets.

The experience is top notch when you're not skiing too. Fabulous food, great wines and beer, and a really fun house party atmosphere of laid back folks having fun every night. They might even have a big block of ice specially cut for taking shots through late at night...though that detail is slightly fuzzy. The accommodations were great too, very comfortable beds in our private chalet just a 30 second walk from the main lodge.

It's not particularly easy to get to, but most places this good aren't. Go as soon as you can, it's that good.

This is the place to go for serious powder. Just got back from a 4 day trip. Huge variety of terrain - open bowls, trees, steeps, logging clear cuts. Fresh tracks every run all 4 days & no shortage of terrain for the next groups to set their own 1st tracks. This place caters to serious powder skiers / boarders with experience in the steep & deep. Not the place to go for the inexperienced (imho) but it rocks if you know what you are doing. 12 persons per cat + lead guide / tail guide. 3 cats running, 36 guests at any time - gives you a good opportunity to meet new people during your visit.

Our snowcat has a Ipod compatible stereo in it - bring your pod & a good play list to keep the cat rocking between runs.

The lodge is in the back-country, near the top of their terrain. Usually only a couple minutes to your 1st run of the day - no long commutes + last run is also usually close to the lodge - again no long commutes - just skiing / boarding. Fly in on a heli if the weather is good - always a blast flying in the heli.

The vibe is much different than heli-ski ops I have been to - younger, more snowboard oriented. Bar in the lodge gets fairly rowdy at night, depending on who is there.

Staff are super-friendly all the way around - guides, cat drivers, bar tenders, etc. Jeff, the owner, was also there on transfer days - super nice guy, really makes all his guests feel welcome. In talking with him, he gets why people come to Baldface - the steep & deep - which seems to be the whole reason he is in the business - his own passion for the steep & deep.

Food is good but not the focus of the trip. Continental breakfasts, lunches are a variety of sandwiches & snacks, which you eat in the cast between runs (no down time, which is appreciated ). Dinners are 3 course (salad, main, dessert) with a different meat each night for the main.

What an experience! Great staff, guides and operators showed us some amazing snow and terrain. Fantastic on-mountain accommodations in their new lodge, along with spectacular food, makes this a great package!
