Oso is the social hub of Nelson for people of all, and I mean all, ages. The line-up for coffee may reach out the door, but everyone is always in a good mood, and the line moves very quickly. The staff is fabulous - always fast, efficient, and friendly. I've never seen even a hint of a frown from any of them, and I have been going to Oso several times a week for years. The owner, John, is a wonderful person who supports many community events, and who really tried and succeeded in creating a beautiful space, employing artists and craftspeople to create a multitude of lovely details. Check out the wavy lines cut into the wood above windows and mirrors to represent the first track cut through powdered snow, and the railings shaped like spawning salmon leaping, ending in the hungry mouth of a bear. Just the multi-level garden area, great to sit out in in the sunshine, took months of work to create. Oh, and the coffee? My favourite, of all the many available in Nelson - strong, freshly roasted in Nelson at Oso's own roastery. Even the decaf (an Americano) tastes like proper coffee, not dish water. If you like treats to accompany yours, there is a delicious array on offer, especially the muffins (the blueberry is loaded with berries), and a limited, but yummy, choice of "serious" food for a light lunch, or the ever-popular "breakfast bun" for earlier on . What's not to love?
