“Charming and cozy.”
Reviewed August 2, 2010

Walking up the stairs to the front door is like walking into another world. Flowers cascade over rock walls, arbors and vines beckon the traveler to relinquish cares.

Chris is an attentive host as well as a very good cook. His blueberry pancakes dusted with powdered sugar were scrumptious as were the homemade apple cinnamon muffins he offered us "for the road." Water, coffee and tea are available at all hours.

We were late booking our reservations but wanted to stay two nights. Chris was very accommodating. We stayed the first night in one room and while we were away the next day the staff took care of moving all our things to another room where we spent the next evening. This worked out wonderfully.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would certainly return if we are ever in Nelson again.

Honestly, for a long time I could not decide whether I should rate this B&B with 3 or 4 points. In the end I chose 3, so that people become aware of an opinion that does not quite join the chorus of almost unanimous praise. However, I would like to point out that the Cloudside Inn is a good B&B and its owners are very friendly. But there are some points that you should be aware of when booking your stay there.
1) For our idea of a B&B it is way too large and professional. As its name says it´s more of an inn than a B&B. The place can at least accommodate 16 people, which can create some sort of hostel-atmosphere. Upon arrival you get asked for your credit card details and have to sign the bill. Chris says this makes it easier for him and for the guests when they leave. I only know this procedure from large hotels and found it quite strange and not very "cozy-B&B"-like.
2) At least the Fir-room is tiny and has a window with frosted glass only. We´ve never had such a small room before (even in a downtown Madrid hostel). The advantage is it has a an ensuite bathroom and an air-condition. From what we guessed from the infromation provided not every room has an air-condition. If this is correct, make sure you get an air-conditioned room in the summer. The weather in Nelson can get really warm. After all you might want to book one of the larger rooms even if this means no en-suite bathroom.
3) The breakfast is good but still has to go a way before it can compete with some of the really great breakfasts a lot of B&Bs on our trip offered. As I´ve said before, the atmosphere at the breakfast table can get quite busy.
All in all, the house is nice and nicely situated in the city center. And as you can see from the other reviews it is highly popular. However, we think it´s not a B&B but something between hostel and small hotel. We also found it a bit over-priced (considering our small room). We wouldn´t stay there again, but we don´t know what the other places in Nelson are like. So you might want to give it a try and see for yourself.

This is extremely disappointing feedback for us, although I do acknowledge that there is an attempt to be fair and balanced in the review. However, as the author remarks at the outset, and I think this is important (for us, as well!) when considering their comments, their views are based on 'their idea of a B&B".

We have, in our four years of operation, received 126 reviews on TripAdvisor, of which this is only the second with three out of five marks. I also hope that this fact says something to anyone reading these comments.

We are large, and there is no attempt to hide that fact, of course. We have seven rooms, but we are totally B&B-like, and not at all run like a hotel - it's our family home, after all. In order to be accredited as a B&B, we voluntarily choose to be inspected by Tourism BC, who classify us as a standard B&B. As the owner, I am on hand to welcome guests and give personal service almost all day long.

The Fir room is our smallest, and this is made clear on our website (where there is a colour photo, and floor size is given in feet and metres), and verbally to every person who enquires about the room. We speak to all customers before a booking is made. There is no attempt to hide the small size in any way, and, for reference, our largest room is almost 800 square feet.

We do not understand the comments about air conditioning, as all rooms come with guest-controlled air conditioners, which is mentioned in every place where we are promoted.

No guest is asked to sign the bill when they check-in, although I can see why this mis-understanding might have occured. It is a legal requirement in British Columbia (and most of the world) to require everyone to sign a registration card, not a bill, when they arrive. We do not charge our guests until after they have left, and maybe I am at fault for not having made this clear. We run an authorisation of the card at check-in so that there is no more administration required to check-out - folks told us that they wanted to leave quickly on check-out, rather than find us to run their card when they wanted to get on the road. This is the only time any guest has commented on this way of doing things, and they said nothing at the time; had they done so, we would gladly have run their card when they were leaving.

We describe our breakfasts as 'homestyle'. Tomorrow, for example, we will serve two home-made granolas (maple and cinnamon spice), two different yoghurts, a large freshly-made fruit salad, home-made Swiss muesli, five other regular cerals, hot oatmeal, a hot course of eggs-to-order with bagels and sausages, home-baked raspberry oatmeal scones or plum almond muffins, toast, fruit juice, and almost any hot breakfast drink, including locally-roasted organic Kootenay Coffee. We do not claim to serve a gourmet-style breakfast, because this is quite simply not what the majority of our guests want: we know that because we are always asking for the opinions of our visitors. It is almost certainly the case that our breakfast is not as fancy as some other B&Bs, but this is not what we are trying to provide.

The comparisons with a hostel are, basically, offensive, to both us and the other guests that were here at the time. My wife and I travelled the world for two years staying only in such places. Our business can accommodate a lot of people, but size and busyness does not a hostel make. I cannot see how the reviewer can call us 'too professional' and at the same time draw comparisons with hostels - that does seem quite an unusual point-of-view.

Although the reviewer has tried to be fair, the comments are still very upsetting. This little business is our life and our livelihood, and we never give less than 100%. It is a great shame that this can be put so out of context in one simple review, although we are genuinely flattered by the more positive reviews. Today one guest came back to the house with a table lamp bought for us as a thank-you, which simply shows that everyone sees things differently.

No-one is perfect, but this review does not present an accurate reflection of what we offer at the Cloudside Inn.

We loved practically everything about the Cloudside Inn, and will stay there the next time we visit Nelson. The room is fresh and clean, the beds are very comfy, the breakfast is great, particularly the homemade granola. The hosts are very organized and hospitable, and run a tight but relaxed ship. The location could not be better--we attended a play at the Capitol Theatre just across the street, and a summer festival not three streets down. Restaurants and shops are just out the door, very convenient.

We stayed here a couple of nights to check out Nelson. The Inn is in a good location, you can walk anywhere in town. One thing to know is that some of the rooms have their bathrooms down the hall, so if that bothers you, you can request one with an ensuite. The breakfasts were adequate and simple. One day was blueberry pancakes with a muffin, the other day was an egg/cheese on an English Muffin. The owners can help with just about any information.

What the Victorian building lacked was made up for by Chris & Sally the hosts. Location is a few minutes’ walk from the town centre with a good selection of shops and restaurants. Our only disappointment was the private bathroom accessed via the corridor, pity it was not en-suite.

Thank-you posting a review for us, and I am sorry that the lack of an ensuite was a problem for you. It is a common feature of older Victorian properties, and, much as we would like all ensuites, it simply isn't possible within the structure of this old house. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay; it was a pleasure to meet you both.

On business in Nelson, I decided to try a B&B instead of a conventional hotel setting. I could not have been more pleased. The welcome was genuine, the room relaxing and the location ideal for my work.
