“Basic, old but with potential”
Reviewed July 14, 2012

After having booked this hotel through internet, we experienced an initial disappointment when we saw it because we expected to find much more modern rooms for the price we were paying. It’s certainly an old building (dating from 1913) but it doesn’t seem to have been either renovated in the last years. As an example, we didn’t see any elevator although the hotel has several floors (and steep stairs). Our room and the en-suite bathroom looked also tired, especially the windows which were really thin and easily allowed us to hear cars passing by or even people talking too loud in front of the hotel. In addition the curtains were not opaque like in many other places we had been. In a similar line, the air conditioning unit was old, also the heater, the TV was normal and there was neither refrigerator nor microwave (see pictures attached).

That said, we had fortunately a good stay because the hotel’s area is quiet. The beds were as well comfortable and both the room and the bathroom were clean.
Let us add also that the staff was friendly, that there were some iPads in the lounge downstairs (between reception and a Mexican (?) bar) and that the packed breakfast that we got in the morning at the reception was really filling.

It’s then clear that this place has a great potential to be a really good place if they undertake some renovations.

We wanted to hang out in Nelson for a few days with our two small mutts. The Grand is an old building with old rooms and creaky floors. It does have character though and great service and wonderful bars, restaurants downstairs. The place is pet friendly BUT the city of Nelson has somehow over-reacted to dogs by placing a 15 square block area as a "no dog zone" including the block we're staying in. We did not realize this and could easily have been hit with a citation unless we played the tourist card.

Having said that, we get a bagged breakfast in the morning which is a flexible way to start the day. Coffee is always available. Our room had a fresh coat of paint, no fridge or microwave although there is plenty of ice and a microwave downstairs. Our room overlooks the lake and mountains so for that view the value is great. The building is full of nostalgia and old times but the lobby/bar/restaurant downstairs have been upgraded and Louie's restaurant is excellent.

In summary, this isn't for everyone and we're in a low maintenance mode this trip so it works for us. It is downtown, close to stores, lake, airport and walking places. It is located at the corner of the "no mutt" zone of the city, has great food and drink downstairs and has friendly service. Bikers have a nice wash zone behind the hotel to clean up. Parking is first come basis and there is a walmart, safeway and save-on plaza nearby. I would come back here but we cannot plan to walk in the city proper with our mutts so it means exploring Nelson outside the city core or drive through with our vehicle. Strange, but true.

Room Tip: We were showed a couple of rooms to choose from.

We are very glad that we picked this hotel for our Nelson stay. The bed was comfy and clean and the staff were super friendly and accommodating. They are doing their very best to create a pleasant stay for guests. When we told them we didn't red meat for the "breakfast to go", the chef made us a special egg/cheese/veggie sandwich which was scrumptious!! We liked having the cofee already made just a few steps down the hall. We enjoyed being able to walk everywhere from there. Parking was okay in mid-week, but could be a problem during tourist season. The drawbacks were the very very squeaky floor and the window above the door that let the hall light shine in all night so it was like daylight all night. Next time I would ask for something to cover that window!

Room Tip: We had a queen bed over the bar in the very corner (cheery and had a view). Traffic is loud there...

We had a boys trip to Bethpage Lodge, which is about a 10 minute helicopter ride from Nelson. We stayed at the new grand hotel the night before we left and the night we got back. Fun atmosphere and clean rooms. Staff went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our boys trip! We will be going back next year.

I and a friend checked into 2 single rooms. Both of our room heaters did not work! We had to relocate to other rooms. Then I was told that I would have to move to another room because the room that I was relocated to was only available for 2 nights (I need a third). After skiing at Whitewater the next day, the parking lot was full (it was a very small parking lot). I was told that it was first come first serve, I had to park at a meter parking!! Yikes!!

Room Tip: Ask for the warmer side room if in winter.
