How often does one get to spend a whole day on a packet freighter visiting small isolated communities along the Port Alberni inlet. We had a fantastic time. Weather was sunny with a slight breeze so we could spend most of the time on the ship's decks and enjoy the spectacular views. The ship can handle up to 200 passenger but we only had about 12 and a couple of dogs. Staff very friendly and informative especially our captain who at one point lent me his high powered binoculars so I could check out some sea lions and eagles. The ship is fairly old but quite comfortable. The outside decks have bench seating which can be a bit of uncomfortable, however they also have fold out chairs which were better. Inside 2 decks one just for passenger seating and a lower deck with a restaurant/ cafeteria. They serve for purchase breakfast and lunch with wine and beer. In speaking with the captain he mentioned that the ship also has 4 cabins which the crew can use if staying overnight. Our excursion was round trip from Port Alberni to Bamfield. At Bamfield you can get off for approx 50 minutes and walk around the small community. In the summer they have additional sailings to other places. Our trip leaving at 8:00 AM lasted approx. 8 1/2 hours If you're staying in the area I highly recommend you take this excursion. Parking is free. Park in front of the boats outside the entrance and as were told by the staff, ignore the 3 hour time limit sign.
