Even though we are boaters who spend about 4 months a year on the water, we loved our day this week on the MV FRANCES BARKLEY. From Port Alberni to Bamfield and return with several stops along the way we enjoyed spectacular scenery and wildlife. Eagles, Cormorants, Seals, Sea Lions, Black Bear were all on the agenda but no whales this time.
The ship is a working coastal freighter and is not a luxury cruise ship. The seating is a combination of small town coffee shop and used school bus but the food is pretty good,( breakfast and lunch) and the tiny bar serves beer and wine. The crew were efficient, informative, and friendly.

We would reccommend this trip to anyone who wants a genuine West Coast experience.

It's like stepping back in time. We boarded the Francis Barkley(the lady Rose has been decommissioned)but the company is still called Lady Rose. When the ship left Port Alberni we
made our way through a fleet of fishing boats 100's of them fishing for salmon. The trip down the
inlet has great views of mountains and if you are lucky spectacular wildlife. We were lucky enough
to see a sea lion that had caught a large salmon . It was beating it on the water while sea gulls
were trying to catch pieces of it .Lots of Eagles and very interesting when we pulled up beside a
small dock to off load some supply's for a cabin owner.Bamfield is unique really west coast .All in all a great way to see the wilderness. Might want to bring along your own pack and snacks and the wind can be cold so dress in layers.

Wonderful opportunity to sightsee while observing a working boat and the communities it serves. Take your binoculars. Friendly staff. Good food on board and an all round wonderful trip. A must do if you are in the area.

We saw an ad in our local paper that they had an October special rate of $30. This peaked our interest since I had never heard of this trip before. After researching on the internet and looking at the upcoming weather we booked a Tuesday trip October 8. We parked our camper in a free city lot overnight, 1 block from the dock to be there at 07:30 the next morning. At first it was foggy but we had a nice breakfast on board and by about 10 am the sun came out and the passengers went out on the decks. It was a glorious sunny fall day and the colours and views stunning. The ship stopped at Kildonan, Canada's only floating post office to deliver mail and cargo. The views entering the Kildonan harbour are breathtaking. A cottage industry makes and sells unusual bird houses on the dock, and we just had to buy one. Onwards sailing to the West and East docks in Bamfield for freight, mail and passengers then a couple of small stops on the return trip to Port Alberni by 5 pm. The crew were all fantastic and had the famous west coast friendliness. They answered questions and the captain pointed out interesting areas over the PA system. There was also a retired local person (yellow jacket) who interacted with the passengers and gave a lot of history in the area. The Barkley Sound is incredibly beautiful on a sunny day and I consider it fortunate that we had such a nice sunny autumn day. I highly recommend this trip for tourism.

The M.V. Frances Barkley (Lady Rose is now retired). A day trip on the water on a freighter. What a great break from clutching the wheel while negotiating endless hairpin turns on the highway between Port Alberni and Ucluelet. Visit outports, including Kildonan, with Canada's only floating post office (and 6 registered voters for the last Federal Election, according to the Captain). The only caution: there are 2 distinct routes, depending on the day. One negotiates the Alberni Inlet from Port Alberni to Bamfield (depart 8 a.m., return 5 p.m.). The other goes further - right to Ucluelet - and to the Broken Islands in Barkley Sound (depart 8 a.m., return 7 p.m). The former is scenic; the latter is even moreso. For under $80/person, it's a deal, particularly if you hit a day with lots of whales surfacing.
