What a wonderful experience! A bright sunny morning we got to the drive just as the gates opened at 8am. The drive should hold no fears. Yes there are switchbacks (hairpin bends) but there are no drop-offs and the road is plenty wide enough. There are places to pull in and admire the views. 1km from the top you come to two car parks. Take your pick. The shuttle bus to the summit starts at 10am and runs until 5 30pm. We were way too early, but happy to walk the final 1km to the summit. There is a choice of two routes. A narrow path which is hemmed in by trees, or a slightly longer route following the road with wild flowers on the verges and wonderful open views to the mountains. Which one to take I'll let you decide.
At the summit is a fire tower which was closed bit there were still 360 views to be had from its base. You can chose from a series of paths. we chose a 30 minute route which included the "ice box" I'll leave that as a surprise.
All in all we spent about 3 hours there and it is one of THE highlights of our trip so far. I hope you are as lucky.
