Very informative. Did not realize the history behind the building of the dam

This dam is not far outside Revelstoke, accessible by car, cab, or even on foot, if you don't mind quite a hike along a highway. But however you go to this attraction, be sure to bring your passport or other adequate ID with you. Security is TIGHT at the entrance to the Visitor's parking lot. The guard there even searched the cab I came in, using mirror extensions to search the cab's under-carriage and trunk recesses.
Once inside the Center itself, you will be asked to check ALL your belongings, including your purse and wallet. But after that, you will be on your own for a self-guided tour - free to go back and forth at your own pace along an extensive series of corridors and rooms.
Posters and films inform you how dams operate. A film shows how one of the Dam's turbines was manufactured in Sao Paolo, Brazil, then trucked all the way across-continent to Revelstoke, necessitating the widening of tunnels and highways.
Then you will make your way through a dank tunnel that goes under the reservoir created by the dam. You can almost feel the pressure of those tons of water weighing in above you. From there you take an elevator up to the observation deck of the dam.
An impressive sight awaits you. This might not be the Hoover Dam, but it must be the next best thing. This is definitely an attraction you will want to take in if you are in the area.

We visited the Revelstoke Dam on a very hot August afternoon because we were looking for a place we could go with the dog. We were greeted with smiles and dog treats when we arrived there as well as being given great advice about what to see during the visit. There are many interactive exhibits which kept the kids (boys aged 5 and 6) interested, and they learned a lot about generating electricity. They loved the elevator ride to the top, and spent quite a bit of time learning how to build their own dam at the activity table. It's a skill they used down at our local river for the rest of the summer. It was very cool in the building, which was a great break from the summer heat. Even the dog loved it.

Well worth a visit with many exhibits. There is lots of information to be read and viewed on this self tour. The view of the dam from the viewpoint at the top is amazing.

I was reluctant to go but gave into my son and husband - I am glad I did. A lot of effort has been made to build this huge dam and to provide a educational experience to the guest who visit.
We were astounded at the engineering feat to took to create the dam. This is a must see for all.

Pet friendly!!
