“Five out of five for sentimental reasons”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

My family stayed the night when my parents celebrated the 40th anniversary of their engagement. My Dad proposed at this hotel because it was "so beautiful" when they visited he didn’t want to wait until Ottawa like he planned. The view and grounds are still very beautiful. (Even though part of the view is "now" hidden by a timeshare complex.) After dinner at the restaurant, we spent a lovely evening by the lake watching a spectacular sunset.

The hotel is very nice: good service, clean rooms, comfortable bed (I loved the abundance of pillows!), large rooms and very peaceful. There is beautiful local artwork hung (and for sale) all through the common areas which provides a lot of character to the space. The over sized Muskoka chair at the front door provided a fun spot for pictures. The rooms had connecting doors which was convenient.

Knowing that this is an older hotel explains a lot of things that aren't perfect with this hotel. The fact that you have to use the stairs instead of an elevator was one negative. (But the stairs are not steep and were an easy to walk for my older parents.) The door to the bathroom in our room would stick and not shut properly, but in my parents' room it was fine. In their room the electrical plugs were hidden behind the furniture so it was hard to find a free plug to charge the cell phone.

There were lots of families with kids staying at the hotel. We didn't hear them through the walls (thankfully!!).

Overall, my parents were delighted with the stay for their anniversary. Sentimentality aside, it was a very good hotel that provided comforts with a spectacular scenic backdrop.

Room Tip: Request a room with a view of the lake.

Stayed there mid August to get a little time away from the city. Considered Deerhurst however the price differential was significant (about $120/night). Brought a powerboat which we launched in nearby Tally Ho Inn (free) and docked at the small dock facility that Hidden Valley offers. You cannot dock overnight, but with the boat launch only 5 minutes away, it's really not a problem. The private condos and beach take away from some of the open areas and the beach area is by no means large. Free rentals of kayaks, canoes and paddle boats is a nice feature. The tennis courts are in rough shape but playable (3 in total). The pool is average size indoors and a bit bigger outdoors however with the number of large trees in Huntsville, don't be surprised by the amount of leaves in it. Hidden valley is by no means a top end resort, but it is quite comfortable for the price and the restaurant is nice as well, albeit a bit pricey, but then again, so is everything else in Huntsville. The lakes are connected so you can powerboat into downtown Huntsville and there are other locks to try out as well. Good location. If you have the extra $$$ then Deerhurst would be interesting as well as the water play areas seemed larger.

Room Tip: Lake side is nice as the balconies are a nice feature to sit out. Not all balconies have a great vi...

We arrive at the Hidden valley Resort at 8 pm on a Friday in August. I asked for a later check out on Sunday but they said we would have to ask the morning of check out. Fast forward to Sunday – I asked the desk at 9:30 for a late check-out and they said we could stay until 1:30 (regular check out is noon). I heard them say that I was the last late check out for the day – so make sure to ask early if you want one.

We got a room on the 1st floor. We had to walk down stairs with our luggage. We were below grade and had a view of grass leading up to the ground level of the parking lot. No balcony or patio. Not a great view but we did not pay for a “view” room. We liked being on the 1st floor due to the proximity of the indoor and outdoor pool.

We had a drink at the bar and were presented with the wrong bill. Please check your bill. Service was good otherwise. We also really enjoyed breakfast in the restaurant, but did not feel the same about dinner. We would skip it next time and have dinner in Huntsville instead.

The room was clean and a good size for 2 queen bed room. The grounds are nice. There was a lot of mess outside on Sunday morning that did not get cleaned up while we were there. The beachfront area was nice and there were lots of activities. My daughter and I enjoyed a paddle boat ride. The outdoor pool was very cool in temperature.

The value was good. We paid about $150 per night with a CAA rate. We liked the location and would return to the resort in future.

Stayed one night - 2 Adults.

The resort is old and tired. The rooms are dated and our room had peeling wallpaper and stains on the mirror in the bathroom. The beds were comfortable.

When we got back from lunch it was approx. 4:00 and there were still bags of towels and dirty linens lining the hallway with housekeeping propping doors of rooms open for cleaning.

Our ice bucket did not have a liner so I asked one of the housekeeping staff who were still cleaning the rooms if I could have one and she said we didn't need one. I asked for one of the liners they used for the small garbage pails and she said that they were just for the garbage pails. Asked her if they were used or some other reason they could not be used for the ice bucket and she said they were not but they were just for the garbage. After asking her point blank for one of the garbage liners she finally gave me one.

The grounds are not taken care of and our view was nothing to write home about. We could see the lake, however there are private residences/condos that block most of the view. No landscaping whatsoever. Mostly weeds and dead grass.

We tried to eat breakfast on the restaurant patio but the tables and chairs were all wet. When the server came out we told him that we would have to eat inside because of this and there was no offer to wipe them off. The view from the patio was better but it is right beside the road and there are power lines running across as well.

The fire doors on the first floor were propped open 24 hours which provides no security.

There is an indoor/outdoor pool. No hot tub but there is a sauna - which we did not use. No in room movies.

1 night including breakfast was approx. $170.00. In the future I would spend the few extra dollars and stay at the Deerhurst Inn or the JW Marriott.

My wife and I stayed one night at this resort. It exceeded our expectations - getting a huge room with two queen size beds, mini fridge, nice flat screen tv, huge bathroom, extremely clean with AC in Muskoka on a beautiful lake with private beach for well under $150 is fabulous value. The beds were extremely comfortable with premium linen and great pillows. The hot and cold all you can eat buffet breakfast was excellent and again great value for under $12. To top things off, the staff were very friendly and helpful. When I had a very minor complaint about some discrepancy in the reservation status, the general manager responded instantly and resolved the issue without hesitation. True, there are not as many fancy amenities as other more upscale hotels in the area - but if you want great value for a very clean, comfortable room on a beautiful lake in Muskoka, this is definitely the place. We will be returning next summer for an extended stay.

Room Tip: If you want room with a view, pay a little more for view of Peninsula Lake.

Nice overall setting on the lake and there are a lot of great amenities...have know this place for 20 years however I think that it may be slipping a bit...it has great potential but needs a bit more to make it great....room was a good size, bed was comfortable, pillows great ...however the certain things needed to be updated...e.g. my bathtub had several huge chips in it, town bigger than a toonie...fitness room has a water cooler but not paper cups and there are no paper towels/cleaner to clean off the equipment after your workout....went to the bar for a drink but they were moving me out before 10:00...however staff were very nice

any event ...not bad and has the potential to be great

We stayed at Hidden Valley this summer for a family retreat. My idea of a Muskoka holiday isn't what we got at HV. Too many people at the beach for a peaceful setting, too few activities at the resort for it to be entertaining. It falls in that unfortunate zone of boring not relaxing.

We went to order lunch one afternoon from the dreadful restaurant because we just decided to eat in and guess what? No service at all. Called from the room phone because I couldn't believe a 'resort' wouldn't serve food and drink at 2pm...and no, answer. I clocked more kilometres on the car driving into town to eat than I would have cared to do on a holiday. Lunch (when we could get it) was not bad, breakfast and dinner were horrible.

All that said, if you have younger children I'm sure that HV would be a great place. Small enough to feel safe with the kids running around. Two pools, two fire pits and a small beach. If only our kids were 10 years younger. Oh, well...

The housekeeping service ladies were quite nice. Jade deserves commendation.

We'll be booking a cottage next time we are in the Huntsville area. I like more privacy or more action than HV provided.

Room Tip: Ask for the low 200's or 300's (if stairs are not a problem). A lake side room with a balcon...
