We were excited to experience our first dinner at the "new" JLB's after the restaurant re-located to Belmont Ave from King Street. The restaurant has only been open a few weeks and we heard from friends that there were still a few minor "kinks" to be worked out. The other common compliant we heard was that the restaurant can be noisy - open kitchen and hard surface walls with a full house will do that.
Our appetizers were a green salad (delicious) and a Caesar salad ( pretty ordinary, and not terribly well presented) . My wife had the short rib entree and I had the risotto with chicken. Both were very tasty, nicely seasoned and delivered steaming hot. For desert we shared a flour-less chocolate cake that was delicious.
Service was ok, but not great. Our server was young and well-intentioned, but seemed nervous, and managed to spill wine on the table.
The atmosphere at the new JLB's is very nice, much more up-to-date than the old location, open, bright and yet warm and inviting. When we sat down to eat it was about three quarters full and the noise level was acceptable. A hour later the restaurant was completely full and the noise was at a level where it was starting to be difficult to enjoy conversation at the table.
Overall we enjoyed our first visit and will definitely be back again. Given the impeccable background of the restaurant and the experience of the owner/manager, Kevin, we expect it will only get better as it grows into it's wonderful new location.
