Owner description: Ontario's first European Community, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was the headquarters for the French Jesuit Mission to the Huron Wendat people. In 1639, the Jesuits, along with French lay workers, began construction of a fenced community that included barracks, a church, workshops, residences, and a sheltered area for Native visitors. By 1648, Sainte-Marie was a wilderness home to 66 French men, representing one-fifth of the entire population of New France. Sainte-Marie's brief history ended in 1649, when members of the mission community were forced to abandon and burn their home of nearly 10 years. After extensive archaeological and historical research, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is now recreated on its original site, where the mission's compelling story is brought to life.

This is a reconstruction of an early European settlement in Ontario. Though the village and associated natives were short lived this museum brings this first contact to life. Staff dressed in costumes of the time are very helpful. The site is wheelchair accessible.

A Christmas tradition in Midland...First Light at Sainte-Marie. You not only see history but you experience it with exhibits and entertainers throughout the grounds. For example the candle-lit pathways and buildings; the displays of candle making the live entertainment in the chapel singing Carols and the entertainment while we ate in the restaurant.

Amazing place to visit. Great place to learn some history (although it is always better to read before), see some presentations -like Indian way of getting fire or getting the boat in from the river - and have cool kids activities (play old days games and build games).

Everyone was friendly...took the time with my son and I. It was horrible weather...didn't matter at all. I was there as a child...and now I've taken my son. It was amazing to revisit. Can't wait to go back. Lots to do. Lots to see. Lots to learn.

The staff dressed in period costumes were eager to point out things my grandson could try...using a period drill to drill holes, try on Huron or French period clothing/shoes, use a quill and ink, etc. Good movie to start the tour off explaining the times in a non biased way for both French and Wendat (Huron) peoples. Could tour easily using site map included in admission fee.
