Owner description: Ontario's first European Community, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was the headquarters for the French Jesuit Mission to the Huron Wendat people. In 1639, the Jesuits, along with French lay workers, began construction of a fenced community that included barracks, a church, workshops, residences, and a sheltered area for Native visitors. By 1648, Sainte-Marie was a wilderness home to 66 French men, representing one-fifth of the entire population of New France. Sainte-Marie's brief history ended in 1649, when members of the mission community were forced to abandon and burn their home of nearly 10 years. After extensive archaeological and historical research, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is now recreated on its original site, where the mission's compelling story is brought to life.

If visiting midland or the area, this is a must do. Staff was very friendly and willing to assist with any questions, do get the wand that provides a narrative of each building. An excellent effort to recreate the buildings as they were 350 years ago. Very educational, and a true testament as to how differing cutltures can work together. the museum is also very interesting having an overview of both the native and french, there are some great finds that were discovered at the site.

Entering the Sainte-Marie site is like stepping back in time. The re-creations are very well done and even the fake props (lots of corn) appear real. I think the strong odors of wood smoke, cooking, etc. also create feelings of authenticity. There are interesting demonstrations happening throughout the day and the costumed participants are knowledgeable and friendly. The museum is also full of interesting information. It is easy to spend most of the day here and still not see it all. The restaurant is nice too; we tried the "Three Sisters Soup;" it was quite tasty.

We went for the festival of lights that they have every year. It was a very nice and educational experience. I don't normally enjoy winter outings, but this was worth the trip outside.
