“Good Pub Food”
Reviewed December 23, 2012

After reading other reviews, we made a reservation on a Sunday for dinner. Lucky we did as we found the pub busy even on a Sunday evening. The pub is located away from the main streets and at 6pm had no problem finding parking. They offer many choices of beer and selections of wine. We shared the onion petals to start and is a must with cold beer. Our mains were Halibut and chips and the ribs and wing special. The Halibut and chips were as good as my favourite take out fish and chips store and the ribs and wings likewise. Overall good pub food, great service and I'm sure the atmosphere keeps them coming back. Since Newmarket has very few good restaurants, I'm sure we will be back on our next visit to Newmarket.

“Some good, some not so good”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

First I should state that my wife and I have been to this pub many times. I will list the things we like first. 1) Draught beer selection (great) 2) Atmosphere and interior 3) Superb staff and friendly fellow patrons. Now the things we don't like 1) Inconsistent food 2) It is impossible to get a table on a Friday without a reservation 3) Finding parking can be a nightmare during prime time.

We have had everything on the menu and even if you dampen your expectations down to pub grub level the kitchen still does not measure up. Meals are inconsistent quality and frozen meals can suffer the most. We have had good salads on 2 occasions and then on the third the greens have actually started to wilt and turn. I have had the liver on one occasion be fantastic and on the other quite poor. The same with the pies. The menu is getting tired and should probably be overhauled. The best food in our opinion is the fish and chips and the specials. Choosing one of these is a good strategy.

The positives for us obviously outweigh the negatives because we keep coming back here. We no longer explore the menu but we love the feel and friendliness of the place. It is especially cozy by the windows watching the snow fall on a cold December night. Give it a try and see what you think. If you want an authentic British pub you are certainly in the right place. As for us we will probably be there this weekend. But we will make a reservation first.

“Great local pub!”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

This is a great local pub with an excellent selection of items on the menu. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
The Fish & Chips are great, the ribs fantastic - and make sure you keep an eye out for their daily specials.
It is always busy, so I would recommend making a reservation.
Parking can be a bit of challenge as well - so be prepared!

“Pub Grub expectation dashed”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

A busy venue with great staff and a good selection of beer on tap. A pity the Scottish Pie was a pre-prepared, re-heated, soggy mess!!! Too much heavy batter encrusted the Halibut and the Cappuchino desert didn't impress either. Disappointing.

“A classic pub”
Reviewed November 17, 2012

This pub has all the trimmings of an old British establishment. The selection of brews on tap was outstanding.
Whether you choose traditional pub fare such as steak and kidney pie, or traditional fish and chips, this place will meet your expectations.
Arrive early to find a parking spot on the small lot, or park on one of the side streets.
