This was the 2nd visit, almost exactly 1 year after the 1st one, with the same friend.
Last year, Mel's had just re-opened after a fire, so we cut them some slack. The service then was terrible, half of what we wanted to order was not available, what we did order was not cooked very well, and badly presented. And, tea came with water from the (not very hot) hot water tap.
Maybe after a year they've settled down, we thought. Alas, no. Except, after one year, the place had noticeably not aged well, and one of the benches in our booth had a very large tear. Should have got higher quality!
Montreal smoked meat sandwiches should not arrive with the bread soggy, and the meat sticking out of the bread dried up and curly. The bread should have more than a very slight coating of mustard, or, mustard should be provided without being asked for. And a dill pickle should be a bit more than roughly on fifth of a very small pickle. And, fish and chips should not be overdone on the outside and underdone on the inside, with the chips obviously out of a frozen bag and under-fried. And one should not have to ask for tartar sauce, and for the price, there should be more than about 1/8th of a small lemon, which was mostly rind.
