Beautiful medium effot hike about 2-3 hours depending if you linger at the top. Make sure you go to the top where the pools are, they're beautiful and you may see climbers on the walls of the canyon at the backside. Recommend packing a lunch. The falls are gorgeous. There is a very steep section of stone steps about 2/3 of the way up, but it's not very long. Way better than Johnston Canyon in my opinion, but I don't like hiking single file behind / around hundreds of people.

And what a view nearly all the way along!

We went hiking to Grassi Lakes but I didn't know what was waiting for me up there. After an hour long but easy, nice hike, we arrived to a BEAUTIFUL, peaceful small lake with the most outstanding colourful water! Whenever you have time, go!!!

If you're up to a more rigorous hike, take the falls trail up to Grassi Lake. If you prefer a more leisurely stroll, skip the falls (though you may regret it... they're spectacular). The Lakes can be crowded at times, but are still worth seeing: the colours are simply amazing.

Although they are outside the Banff National Park, this is a must go place. Go during the brighter hours of the day so you can see the amazing colors of the lakes. Take the "more difficult" trail on the way up and the easiest one on the way down. It is a good place to spend 3 hours. I've been 3 times to this place and no regrets!

I remember hiking Grassi Lakes in the springtime in the 1990s. The parking lot had just a few cars, the trailhead sign always had a bear warning sign stapled to it. You could enjoy a peaceful time in the woods. I revisited Grassi Lakes with my sister's family this August, we made it to the trailhead parking just before lunchtime. There was no parking in the lot, there was attempts by visitors to parallel park on the road causing the road to be plugged and turning a fairly wide road into a one way street.
The best way to go is the more difficult way up and the easy way down. Especially on busy weekends the congestion on the way up would be less intense. The lakes are beautiful and have not changed a bit. We continued on the climb up to the Smith Dorien Road to the lake at the top. It is very windy up there! It is very important to stick to the marked "staircase" trail to avoid dislodging any rocks that would fall toward the crowd sitting along the lakeshore. I noticed many folks unprepared wearing flip flops and not carrying water etc. Flip flops and sandals are unacceptable. But then this is the case any popular tourist trail spot.
Overall it was a wonderful day to a familiar place to bring back memories of my young days and spend time with family.
