Owner description: Howling Dog Tours is a family-run operation out of Canmore Alberta and offers visitors a unique outdoor adventure. The company runs tours in the majestic Rocky mountains, near Canmore, Banff and Kananaskis Country, which combine spectacular alpine scenery with the fun of a dogsled ride. Whether you prefer to sit back as a passenger or attempt to lead your own husky team with the help of your guide, the experience is truly unforgettable. There is plenty of interaction with the Alaskan and Siberian huskies, snacks and beverages, and a professional guide on each sled. Howling Dog offers a variety of tours, ranging from two-hour trips to half-day adventures, and can create custom trips for groups and corporations. Howling Dog Tours Ltd. is based out of Canmore, Alberta, and is not affiliated with the B.C. company with a similar name. Each tour begins with a complimentary pick up in Banff or Canmore, followed by a scenic drive to the site in the back country of the Canadian Rockies. Upon arrival to the site, guests are given a brief introduction, as well as safety talk prior to being assigned to a guide. Each sled is professionally guided for the guests safety and comfort. It is company policy to only run guided sleds; it is the best way to control a dog team and still give the customer a chance to take a turn driving the team, decreasing the risk of injury to dogs and guests! The guides will make sure that each guest has appropriate gear, and if required, snow boots, pants, jackets and hats will be loaned to the guest for the tour duration - no charge! Once the guests are ready, the introduction to the team happens, where each person is encouraged to learn the dogs names, and help harness a dog. Guests are then allowed to help while the guide hooks up the dogs to the lines in front of the sled. The dogs, when walked to the line, may be lifted up to walk on their back feet - this is done to control the pressure of the collar on the neck, because the are so strong and want to pull (we call this "taking them out of 4-wheel drive!). Once out on the trail, there is plenty of time to learn more about each dog and the breed in general. The breeds you will see are the Alaskan, Siberian, and Seppala Husky. There are Iditarod and Yukon Quest veterans to meet as well as retired sprint racing dogs, still full of energy and always raring to go! Snacks and hot beverages are offered at the mid-way point of the tours. The dogs are rewarded at the end of the tour with a biscuit and bowl of water - hugs are allowed too! Each trip ends by offering for purchase (optional) a photo of the moving team and guests, taken at the start of the tour - the only photo you can't get yourself! Take some time to get the names of your team written on the back, so you can remember them for a lifetime!

“Pricey, but well worth it!”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

My family of four just spent a few days out at Banff, and after years of seeing Howling Dog Tours brochures, we decided to pay them a visit. All in, we paid $388 for four of us. It's a little pricey, but certainly well worth it. I'm not sure dog sledding is an activity people would rush out to do multiple times a year, or every year... so I think the price is fair. We'll definitely repeat with this company in a few years.
We were picked up promptly in front of our hotel by their driver, and booster seats were prepared for our children (4 and 5). It was a 40minute drive from the Banff Springs Hotel through Canmore, and up past Spray Lakes. There, we were greeted and assigned to our sled guide, Cheryl. Cheryl was awesome with the kids, and introduced all of us to our very friendly dog team. My kids were a little intimidated by all the noise of 100 or so excited dogs, but when I confirmed to them the dogs were just really happy and excited to take us for a ride... my kids became more brave and helped hitch up the dog team to our sled. The ride was awesome... fairly peaceful out in the great Alberta mountain wilderness. We stopped at the halfway point for a light snack and hot chocolate, and an opportunity for more pictures and to hangout with our dog team. I was invited to 'drive' the sled on the way back... which really means ride co-pilot on one of the rails (and try not to fall off).
Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and one that I will surely repeat. The sled tour was the hi-light of our weekend!

“"Amazing Outdoor Experience"”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

Our experience with Howling Dog Tours was fantastic. The team in Canmore was very professional and organized. We lucked out with the weather and had a beautiful sunny/slightly snowy day. Lindsay was our guide; he was great with the dogs and such a fun host. I’d highly recommend this experience to any one!

“Great date in Canmore”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

We had so much fun during our afternoon with Howling Dog Tours. The experience was second to none. The dogs are adorable - and amazing! And the tour guides are knowledgeable and fun. It was a great date and a memorable adventure. Beautiful scenery - a great way to see the beautiful Rockies in the winter.

“Amazing experience!”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

The employees of this company truly love what they do. They are extremely knowledgeable of the dogs, and you can tell the dogs well being is their top priority. The dogs are healthy and happy and seem to love what they do. Super friendly guides, friendly dogs, just an all round amazing experience. I definitely recommend this company to anyone looking to have a unique experience. Would be a lot of fun for people of all ages depending on weather. It would be a little difficult for people with mobility issues to get in and out of the sled, but the staff is extremely helpful.

“Dog sledding was excellent”
Reviewed January 13, 2014

We were very pleased with the dog sledding tour, it was a lot of fun. One slight disappointment that the first date we had planned was cancelled as there weren't enough tours booked on the date. It was a bit of an inconvenience and the company weren't particularly apologetic for putting us out. The tour itself was still great and I would definitely recommend it.

Thank you for your comment regarding the re-scheduling of the tour. As do many activity providers, we have a minimum amount of sleds that need to be booked in order to run the day or tour time. We appreciate the fact that you were able to reschedule, and do recommend that outtings such as ours are not booked on the last day of the vacation, simply because it is a winter activity and things can come up, resulting in a scheduling change. We are glad you enjoyed it and will endevour to express our gratitude more frequently (as we are always grateful) to those who are able to change due to our circumstances! Thank you for joining us.
