“Great experience but fairly noisy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2010

This would be heaven on earth if not for the trains. The river side location is wonderful, the animals (dogs, horses and a cat who insisted on sleeping in our tipi) walking freely around the grounds are very charming and the history of the place interesting. It is close enough to Hinton to be convenient but far enough away to feel out in nature. And William A Switzer provincial park is actually surprisingly nice, especially Jarvis lake. So all could be great.
But then there are the trains. We found them quite bothering. The trains run right on the other side of the river and we’re talking the long cargo versions that can take up to 20 min to pass. There were fewer at night but still some 4-5 of them, and I found it difficult to sleep though. I’m not sure how other reviewers could describe it as a quiet place. Maybe we just hit a peak period for train transport. It should be said that this experience is for tipi camping. I very much doubt that the noise from the trains would be much of an issue in the cabins.
We stayed in a river side tipi for a couple of days, never having tried tipi "camping" before. We were positively surprised by how cozy and comfy a tipi can be, especially with the stove blazing. It is perfectly possible to keep it not just lurk-warm but hot, though not at night if you want to have any sleep at all since it does require frequent tending to the fire. The only problem was that the tipi was a bit wet inside, including the bed, due to large amounts of rain the days before. That being said we did not feel the wet though our sleeping bags, so it was not really a big deal.
So all in all in many ways a great experience, but one we emerged from bleary eyed and tired. For those who sleep more soundly than me, the experience might have been simply great.

Old Entrance, like so many other communities throughout western Canada, was established in a river valley, along a railway line. The town of Jasper for instance has the railway yard right in the center of town and there the rail cars are sorted and shunted with unending banging and clanging all through the day and night. Some tourists arrive and depart on the Via Rail train, just as visitors did pre-1950s. Trains on the CNR main line pass by Old Entrance on the opposite side of the river about 1/4 mile distant and out of sight behind trees. The loudest part of the trains noise is when the engine passes by then after that the rest of the train rumble on through on averge taking 5 to 10 minutes. CNR runs trains infrequently between 10 pm and 5 am, then there may be one train every hour throughout the day. There is no nearby level crossing so the trains do not blow their whistle. The vast majority of our guests are more curious about the trains than appalled by the noise. We suggest ear plugs for light sleepers.

What a wonderful location by the river which had just turned green for our visit! The accommodations were so comfotable, the breakfast in the lovely dining room was delicious and the history lesson from mary really helped put the whole place into perspective. Thanks, ladies, for a memorable stay. The hammocks would make a great place to spend a warm night, and the walk along the old railway bed was so peaceful. We enjoyed meeting Asparagus too!

We spent 2 nights staying in Teepee #1 and loved every minute of it.

The location was fantastic, right on the side of the river, beautiful scenery and so quiet. We had a BBQ just outside which we used to make dinner both nights and loved sitting out in the fresh air eating and then building a fire to spend the evening next to. Amazing to only be able to hear the sound of the fire crackling and the river below.

The wood burning stove inside meant that when we did go to bed it was all warm and cozy inside the teepee and i think we had our best 2 nights sleep on the whole holiday here.

The pit toilet next to our teepee was basic but all part of the experience and there was a proper toilet just a couple of minutes away so it was no problem.

Mary was friendly, helpful and full of information about the area which was great. We had a great time here and it was probably the best 2 nights of our holiday in Canada, would highly recommend this to anyone looking for somewhere to stay in this area.

With a few vacation days coming we had no idea where to go as our usual camping place near Nordegg Alberta was calling for cold temperatures and rain. While checking upcoming weather for just about every part of the province Hinton Alberta seemed to be the only place calling for warm weather and less chance of rain so we moved our search to Hinton and Area where while surfing we came across Old Entrance. I was immediantly drawn to the place , after reading reviews and checking out the website we booked 2 nights in a tipi and changed to 3 nights as soon as we got there. Words cannot express how much I needed those three days. I wanted to get away from day to day life and just relax and although it cost more money than I anticipated I enjoyed every minute of it and wish I had more time there. The tipi camping was a first experience and except for the insects that got in from time to time I loved it. It had a stove inside which kept us nice and cozy and the bed was quite comfortable. The sites were large and very clean and had everything you needed. BBQ with propane, axe, nice chairs, fire pit , picnic table, water, wood, even a crib board! The grounds were beautiful with horses grazing nearby. The cabins are also very nice ..I had the opportunity to check some of them out. Owners Carol and Mary were great, down to earth and very accomodating. If you bring your own breakfast it will return with you because once you try Carol's granola and Jam you will end up there every morning. Mary took us on a 1 hour horseback ride which was so relaxing and beautiful. The sound of the river at night will put you to sleep. I miss Rosie and Jesse ..the dogs already! Both my fiancee and myself enjoyed our time there. We are already looking at a fall return ..hoping to stay in cabin #4 ..its a smaller cabin but the view is amazing!

Went for one night as we were passing through but wished we had stayed a few nights more! Beautiful surroundings and very peaceful, only the sound of the river - bliss!
The Teepee was great, very cosy with the log stove burning! The Old Entrance is kept very clean. Toilet and wash facilities very basic but it is worth it! Mary was very friendly and helpful. Would like to come back again in the future.

Our family of four enjoyed three nights in Teepee #3 by the beautiful Athabasca River. It's a fun experience to overnight in a teepee-- we stayed warm on cold nights under piles of comfy blankets and with a wood stove. For teepee-dwellers, restrooms are no-frills. Grills are provided to cook your meals, but don't bother to bring breakfast foods-- the meals served every morning qualify as a healthy feast, including at least one freshly baked treat like blueberry crisp. Trail rides on-site were great for casual riders. Other activities are nearby, including Miette Hot Springs and hikes in stunning Jasper National Park. Note that you may hear a train or two after you go to bed, but if that wakes you on a cloudless night, take the opportunity to peak outside at an incredible star-filled sky you can't see near any city. Friendly staff accommodated our requests and were great company at breakfast.
