“Quirky but clean and reasonably comfortable.”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

We stayed one night at Kasa de Piedra Guesthouse due to the attractive summer rate. Based on the previous review, we called the Guesthouse to confirm that check-in is through the nearby Ambrosia Restaurant. The young lady working at the Ambrosia checked us in upon arrival. She was friendly and welcoming, gave us clear directions to the Guesthouse and provided us with an excellent recommendation to the nearby Nk'Mip Vineyard and Resort for dinner. Both the Ambrosia Restaurant and the Kasa de Piedra Guesthouse are located by approximately 5 min drive away from the town centre of Osoyoos. The Guesthouse is fairly large and, thankfully, air-conditioned. The surroundings are simple, not particularly scenic as it is located directly on Main Street. The area is not well lit at night and can be difficult to identify if arriving in the dark. The owners were not at the Guesthouse and there were no staff, all of whom are probably working at the restaurant. Furnishings and decor are dated but the place is clean. Wood floors throughout the house - a note to other guests - please refrain from walking around in heels, which are very loud and noisy on wood floors! We were welcome to use the kitchen or bbq but we dined out instead. Our room, Topaz, is located on the main floor and although it faces the street, we found the room to be reasonably quiet (with the exception being the aforementioned guest with heels clacking on the wood floors). The room is spacious with a small bathroom containing single shower stall, sink and toilet. There was a queen bed (comfortable), coat rack (no closets), dressers and a sitting area with 2 arm chairs. There was no TV in the room but there is a TV room downstairs. The wi-fi worked well enough (remember to ask for the password during check-in at the Ambrosia) and we were able to watch netflix on our iPads. Complimentary breakfast is served at the Ambrosia Restaurant, where we could order anything from the breakfast menu. We had ham and cheese omelettes, which were delicious and portions were generous. Overall, we had a comfortable stay and would considering coming back.

We booked our night at Kasa de Piedra Guesthouse because it was reasonably priced for a summer Friday night in Osoyoos, and the pictures looked nice.

We used our iPhone to direct us to the guesthouse, and it was not quite correct in its direction, but never fear, we found it. It was hot, hot, HOT to us Vancouverites, and I have to admit it was a bit of a drag to find the front door locked with a sign directing us to Ambrosia Restaurant, where we were to check in. It would have been good to know this up front, though our confirmation from Trip Adviser (with whom we booked) did not give us this information. At any rate, don't let this deter you from this pleasant place to stay!

We drove a few blocks to Ambrosia Restaurant and checked in with no problems. We drove back to the guesthouse and parked in the ample parking area. The lock on the front door is a bit sticky (July 2013), but as soon as the door opened, we were greeted by the cool, air-conditioned air - what bliss!

Though our room was upstairs, we were told we could spend time in any of the common areas of the house. A kitchen - fully stocked with dishes, cutlery, coffee maker (looks like you need to bring your own) and tea kettle (some tea in the cupboard, but bring your favourite), refrigerator/freezer/ice-maker, microwave, sinks; Dining room-had a table, though I'm not sure if there were chairs (??, I don't remember seeing any); a big back yard; patio with gas barbecue (yes, you can use it!).
The house was very quiet, clean and cool when we arrived and throughout our stay.

We headed upstairs. No elevator, stairs only - narrow stair case. Upstairs were 4 rooms and we had the Emerald room. It was nice looking with a 4 poster, queen-sized bed, two armless chairs (nice for ample bums!), dresser, coat rack with some hangers, bed side table, digital alarm clock. The room overlooked the back yard, an orchard, corn field and possibly some vineyard.

The bathroom is small, but clean, with only a single stall shower, toilet and sink. The room is air conditioned, but with a vent in the bathroom and in the main part of the room - no control over the temperature other than to close or open the vents or open your window. Remember, it was HOT outside, and by the end of the day, we did find this room a bit more warm than the rest of the house. However, it was still quite comfortable.

There is supposedly wi-fi here, but we never did get the password to work correctly. Clarify that with the folks at check in. There was no staff apparent at the guest house, though a phone number was provided should we need anyone. However, no phones in the house, and no TVs. Since we travel with our own laptops and cell phones, they weren't necessary, but if you need those things, then keep that in mind!

In the morning, we were told there was a complimentary breakfast. We imagined a continental breakfast. Instead, we were directed to dine at Ambrosia restaurant, which serves Western and Indian cuisine. We ordered off of the regular menu, whatever we wanted (for the most part, no steak and eggs!) and food sensitivities/allergies were worked around. It was a much better breakfast than simply continental, but not as great as some fancy bed and breakfasts. Nonetheless, we were totally satisfied with our experience at Kasa de Piedra Guesthouse and recommend it for those who are quiet, seeking quiet, and clean comfort on a budget!
