Owner description: Enjoy the gardens, relax in the Kitchen Garden Cafe and visit the animals. The gardens are full of interesting features including colourful terraces and herbaceous borders, formal lawns, kitchen gardens, woodlands, meadows and ponds. There are impressive views too and you can buy some plants to take home with you. At the Kitchen Garden Cafe you can enjoy coffee, cakes, light lunches including pizzas and other hot food from the outdoor wood-fired oven. Homemade ice-creams and cordials are also on the menu. We grow and rear as much of our own produce as possible for Askham Hall Cafe and our pub and restaurant the George and Dragon in nearby Clfton. You can meet the animals too in our special animal viewing area - including rare-breed pigs, goats and shorthorn cattle and soon, free-range chickens and ducks. And children can also enjoy the outdoor play area.

We had the best pizza ever!! It was the first time my husband and I had such perfectly made pizza, it was fresh, homemade and tasty. The cakes were also delicious (and usually we don't really like british pastry - we're french).

“In its infancy as an attraction but will succeed given time”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

This small but interesting country house set in the idyllic village of Askam in the Eden valley seems to be undergoing a transition from private estate into a viable attraction. It is not there yet, but given time, I'm sure it will become quite popular. The formal terraces and gardens still need some work, but this was early autumn after all. Even so, they still have their good points e.g. the variety of mature trees, the topiary and views. An ornate gypsy caravan and huge stone griffons are interesting features. I believe the main house is now available for holidays and maybe weddings?
The Kitchen Garden Cafe is enjoyably and eccentrically rustic, with entry through a well worn stable type door and basic seating and tables arranged in a stable like formation. Flagged floors and a wood burning stove add to the coziness. A range of tasty cakes and tray bakes are available plus some more substantial soups, sandwiches and stews. In summer, pizzas are cooked to order in a wood burning pizza oven. Our cafe lattes were well made and presented.
Modern toilet facilities are available in the same out buildings.
The actual kitchen garden is well stocked and recent picnic tables, children's play area and animal viewing area are sure to please families. More work is planned so - watch this space.

“Overpriced and overgrown”
Reviewed September 7, 2013

Cafe is fine but nothing exceptional. The Gardens are very disappointing, weedy and uncared for with no plant-labels or interesting features. Should really be free as an incentive to come to the cafe or perhaps £2 for charity - certainly not a tourist destination!

“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

I stumbled across the website for Askham and just had to see the place. Coffee was good and was served on tables in the orchard. I did feel that someone could remove bird droppings off the tables and benches - I had to perch on the end to avoid and with a dodgy hip not very comfortable. The girls behind the counter were friendly. We only had drinks so did not try the appetizing selection of cakes. The pizza oven was working when we were there but there didn't seem to be any takers. We were a bit bemused by the signing which as a previous reviewer has noted is not very clear. The stable buildings are lovely and I am looking forward to seeing the house and spa. There is just a lovely atmosphere about the place and we will be back to investigate further. There is no entrance fee for the coffee shop -
