Owner description: Enjoy the gardens, relax in the Kitchen Garden Cafe and visit the animals. The gardens are full of interesting features including colourful terraces and herbaceous borders, formal lawns, kitchen gardens, woodlands, meadows and ponds. There are impressive views too and you can buy some plants to take home with you. At the Kitchen Garden Cafe you can enjoy coffee, cakes, light lunches including pizzas and other hot food from the outdoor wood-fired oven. Homemade ice-creams and cordials are also on the menu. We grow and rear as much of our own produce as possible for Askham Hall Cafe and our pub and restaurant the George and Dragon in nearby Clfton. You can meet the animals too in our special animal viewing area - including rare-breed pigs, goats and shorthorn cattle and soon, free-range chickens and ducks. And children can also enjoy the outdoor play area.

“Mixed experience”

Two of us had lunch. I had a delicious veggie pizza. My wife had "The worst lunch she has had for a long time". Sandwich came with salad and the leaves were all slimy and totally inedible. She asked if she could have the tea she wanted with the meal but was refused as "We are too busy to do that". There was nobody else waiting to order at the time.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you had a bad experience during your visit to Askham Hall cafe. Our salad leaves are home grown in our kitchen garden in the new polytunnel which you can see from the cafe, and are freshly picked daily, therefore they should always be fresh. We are also sorry to hear that you were let down by our customer service on that day, this does not meet the high standards which we strive for with our friendly and helpful staff. I am sure that if you were to return to Askham Hall you would have an enjoyable experience.

“Fabulous wood fired pizza with a view if outside”
Reviewed May 31, 2013

Had read about this place in Conde Naste traveller and was not disappointed. A lunch of wood fired oven baked crispy and light pizza and delicious tap water. Coffees and the best chocolate cake ever tasted came in at a reasonable price and was enjoyed by us all.
Prompt and friendly service.
We ate inside in the stables but there are plenty of picnic style wooden tables outside plus a small play area on the other side away from the tables. Immaculate gardens and fruit cages to inspire you.
Lovely loos with nice lavender smellies.

“Lovely little cafe”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

The Kitchen Garden Cafe at Askham Hall Gardens makes a nice stop over for coffee or a quick bite to eat. Surrounded by little gardens growing herbs etc and a few little animals.

We made a visit for coffee and was pleasantly surprised by the rustic but delightful atmosphere inside. The eating room was in what seemed to be a former stable with popular rugged and rough wooden tables and chairs that a lot of 'modern' country cafes now seem to use. Lovely wood fire kept us warm.

The food is homemade and quality and good size portions. Also have homemade cakes. The chocolate one is well recommended.

Really liked this place and will visit again if in the area. Nice polite friendly service. All seemed a bit posh though.

“Lovely venue”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

It is a pleasure to see old farm buildings utilised and brought back to life and the Kitchen Garden Cafe at Askham Hall Gardens is just such a place. After a stroll around the lovely gardens at the hall nothing could be more perfect to finish off a visit than to enjoy morning coffee, light lunch or afternoon tea, in the converted buildings.

We visited on a very cold day and were welcomed by a lovely hot roaring stove fire, found excellent service and lovely food. The atmosphere is different and not tea-shoppy, you actually feel as though you are stepping back in time. I had a lovely coffee and delicious cake. I cannot comment on the main meals because we didn't try them but we will definitely be going back later in the summer to see how the gardens are developing and perhaps to enjoy lunch.

One can only wish the project well and I feel sure the venue will grow in popularity.

“Nice visit - a new attraction and will only get better”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

A nice couple of hours spent here. It is clearly newly opened (earlier this year apparently) so we had realistic expecations and it will no doubt improve more as things mature. Buildings are full of character and the cafe served a lovely cup of tea. The pigs are charming!
