“A very good meal”
Reviewed January 27, 2014

None of us had ever been to the Punchbowl before so last Friday night four of us went for a meal expecting the usual pub grub.
Instead we had an excellent meal at pub prices. The menu comprises the common pub dishes (gammon, lasagne etc) but also has more unusual items.

We had 3 different starters, all excellent- big portions for starters too. Black pudding with bacon, mozzarella & peppercorn sauce with salad, celery & stilton soup with a crusty roll & greek meatballs with curried chickpeas, spicy tomato sauce& salad.

Our mains were rump of lamb, 2x pork 3 ways (3 pieces pork all cooked in a different manner), & pigeon breasts in filo pastry with raspberry sauce. Potatoes came according to the main dish (mash or crushed new pots, no one had chips) and our big dish of assorted fresh vegs was correctly cooked. Portions sizes were good.

Pudds (sticky toffee, choc brownie with homemade honeycomb ice cream, American cheesecake with butterscotch sauce) were all good too.

Presentation of the food was of a high standard -more like a restaurant than a pub & much appreciated.Service was very friendly and efficient.

If we had any criticism at all it was that the table we were given was in a cool part of the room away from the log fire. Probably it it was our fault for not wearing warmer clothes.
After all it was a dark, wet January night in an old stone building......

All in all it was worth travelling 20+ miles for an excellent dining experience-one that we will repeat.

We have had three meals at the Punchbowl during December 2013 and the meals were all excellent. The staff are welcoming and keen to please. There was a warming log fire and a colourful Christmas tree. There is a good selection on the menu and the prices reasonable. We live in Askham and it is good to see new tenants making an effort to re-establish the Punchbowl's previous reputation.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your comments.

Its nice to know that people in the village can hopefully begin to start trusting the pub again after so many years of inconsistency.

We had all looked forward to our Christmas Day dinner at the Punchbowl having booked some time ago for a 12.30.meal. Six of us arrived at noon to find a dismal, dreary looking building, a totally empty car-park, no internal lights evident and no sign festive decorations (where was everyone?). With sinking feeling we stepped into an unwelcoming and bitterly cold, dark, drab room with no heating ( still no decorations !) and not a soul in sight - certainly there were no cooking aromas! - Matters went from bad to even worse. The meal was a total disaster. My husband and I were presented with barely warm food with some still-raw vegetables. Complaining about everything we'd tolerated led to a tirade of aggression from our waiter ... indeed he certainly took on the role of Mr Whackford Squeers - the owner of Dotheboy's Hall in Charles Dicken's 'Nicholas Nickelby' (1835)

Normally people use this forum to express an honest and frank perception of their dining experience but in this instance we feel this particular response is malicious and completely unfounded.

As a business we do our upmost to provide quality food and only the very finest service, in fact since we re-opened (march 2013) we have received a lot of positive feedback on this very forum and are extremely proud of what the team at Punchbowl have achieved.

We do sometimes make mistakes but we pride ourselves in dealing with issues that do arise professionally, so we are able to offer our customers options and solutions and do our very best to amend a problem.

We do on this occasion feel it is only fair to tell our side of this story but to also remain professional.

Yes we are here to serve it underpins everything we do as good hosts, but when we are subjected to abuse a certain line is crossed and not one member of our team should have to be treated in the manner they were treated on this occasion. For the record I would just like to state that the other members of this particular party actually apologised to us on the day for the behaviour of a select few, thank you for your support and as you can see this already totally contradicts what was written.

We would also like to point out that for all the items of food including all the food you did not leave a scrap of on your plate, when it became clear that you were unhappy about a particular issue and very rudely and inappropriately told our staff after being offered numerous alternatives you were still you were not charged a single penny for any of your meal.

We have worked extremely hard in our first year to build a reputation, as you can see from comments left on this site the way we have been portrayed in this instance is unlike any one else's experience here, it is un true and what one can only describe as criminal.

We look forward to welcoming customers old and new in the new year and would like to hold our hand out to any one who wants to experience a beautiful lake district setting and fantastic food that goes hand in hand with attentive friendly service.

Happy new year.

Up in the area for Christmas staying with relatives. Visited early evening Christmas eve for a meal. Staff very welcoming and looked after us very well. Nice log fire, and quite cosy despite miserable night outside. Good selection on menu, reasonable prices. Food well presented without undue wait, and enjoyed by all.

We've eaten here a few times in the past couple of months and the food and service have been excellent. A varied menu with plenty of choice for all, with very generous plates of well cooked food. The service is excellent also - really friendly and straight-forward. Everyone we have been to the pub with has felt the same - top notch! Really good to see the new tenants/owners making a go of what is a really lovely pub in a great village - very accessible. Looking forward to visiting again soon.

We stayed at the Punchbowl this weekend . The rooms are lovely and our stay was made extra special by the warm & friendly atmosphere . The food was excellent offering a wide & varied menu which is all freshly cooked to your liking. An open fire gave a lovely welcome back feeling after walking the fells which are on the doorstep. Simon the proprietor was very accommodating to all our needs resulting in a most enjoyable relaxed weekend . We plan to return very soon .
