The Queens Head Inn
Ranked #3 of 3 Askham B&B and Inns
Reviewed May 6, 2014

We had a meal here over the bank holiday weekend. Chose the Queens as we'd seen it mentioned in the top 50 pubs in Cumbria life magazine. I've been to the Queens a good few times over the years and it was, and still is a nice cosy country pub, so, why am I disappointed? The beer was ok. The food was only average and I did expect more from somewhere ranked in the top 50 in the county. I've eaten in better places that weren't listed in this publication so, is it just a subscription thing to make the top 50? The menu was adequate but in reality basic, the food quality ok but nothing more. The real gripe? Slow! The place was not busy, but food took best part of an hour to arrive, we were close to walking. Sadly it may be a while before we return.

We booked into the Queens Head for the weekend. Very friendly staff, nothing was a problem. It has a lovely atmosphere, very welcoming and the food was really good. Breakfast was brilliant. The room was good and the bed comfy. I would certainly stay here when in the area.

Stayed here for one night as we were wanting some dog friendly accommodation - we got so much more! This is a very friendly pub with loads of atmosphere and great cask ales. We enjoyed a beautiful meal of Picana steak, an extremely tender cut that we had not sampled previously. Breakfast was 5* and included black pudding much to our delight - oh and a slice of sausage for Jess after we had finished. Our room ( Tethera- Cumbrian for 3) was lovely and the bed extremely comfortable and spacious. The building itself oozes character, enjoying wooden beams together with the obligatory creaking floors. We are struggling to come up with any negatives here - even the location is delightful, Askham having plenty of interesting walks and Askham Castle Gardens amongst other attractions.

We usually stay in hotels.
What a difference!
The Queens Head Inn,was like staying away with yet to be met friends.
Sitting in front of the open fire, the weather outside might have been cold, but with plenty of black sheep and local craic, the atmosphere was warm.
We were made to feel very welcome by our hosts.
Breakfast was tasty,dinner sublime.
Our room was a little dated, but then again this is an old inn.
Lola thoroughly enjoyed it to;this is a very dog friendly place.
Great stay!

This is a pub, an excellent pub, roaring fire, warm welcome, excellent food and drink, good atmosphere. The rooms are fine for pub rooms, but unfortunately ours was stony cold with the heating off at 8 a.m., so we skipped the shower and got dressed quickly. Pity, easy to put right, spoiled our stay. Oh, and the sliding door to the loo afforded very little in the way of privacy!

We stayed here for 2 nights with our children. We received a very warm welcome and were shown to our room. Room was very spacious with a separate room for the boys and beds were very comfy and bathroom was huge. Food was really good and all homecooked. Great atmosphere and sat by the open fire both nights. Excellent breakfast and very filling. Boys enjoyed playing pool each night and also a range of games and puzzles in the bar to keep them entertained. Good selection of real ale and wine and at very reasonable prices. Staff were all very nice and helpful especially Eileen the landlady and would defintately recommend. Great location for the lake district. We would def return when the weather a bit better to experience the outdoor pool. Fantastic weekend had by all.
