“Customer friendly hotel in a great location”
Reviewed April 22, 2012

We had 2 nights DB&B at this hotel and overall we really enjoyed the experience. The public rooms are cosy and it was great to sit down by a real fire following dinner and chat to the other guests. The hotel is clean and the food was wholesome with lots of options at dinner and a full breakfast buffet with both hot and cold choices. The hotel dose'nt have a bar, which was a surprise but there is a large selection of bottled beers, wines and spirits in the reception area and these can be purchased at any time. The bedroom was in the main house and this was fine even though it was a little tired, it was clean and it had all of the facilities we needed and a comfortable bed so there was no problem.
The staff were friendly and helpful and they responded efficiently to all requests.
It was a little more expensive than I expected (circa £150 per night for a couple DB&B) but it was worth it to us as we had a good stay and enjoyed the break.
I would recommend the Dovedale Stepping Stones walk to anyone who enjoys scenery but is unable to complete difficult terrains or distances - it was a easy stroll (except for a couple of stepped climbs and it was simply beautiful. Buxton is also worth a visit as it has some great architecture and a few nice shopping areas.

Room Tip: I would go for a room in the main house simply because you feel part of the hotel. Investigate the...

Just returned from a 2 night DBB stay. Lovely hotel in great setting. Rooms a little quirky as you might expect from such an old house. Bathroom rather dated but was clean and efficient. Large, comfortable bed and Freesat TV.
Staff were very attentive and helpful. Previous reviews refer to 1970/80's food - whatever that is. We found dinner excellent in choice, presentation and quantity - perfect after a day out rambling in the fresh air. We thought the dinner was 3 courses but you also get cheese and coffee as well. Breakfast is a hot/cold buffet with plenty of choice although the chef had a bit of difficulty keeping up with the hot demand but you only had to ask for anything and it arrived smartly (including decaf). In our case we were on the winter special break so we had a packed lunch included - again perfect for snacking whilst out.

Overall, not a cheap hotel, but you get what you pay for in quality, quantity and service.

In instances like these It's easy to get carried away with negatives about a place, but this isn't a negative review, our stay was enjoyable, the food was good and the room was clean.
However, with just a little extra the hotel could be a really special destination.
As I said our room was clean, but the bathroom was a little tired, our some stayed with our dog away from the main building and again his room was clean and we were delighted to find somewhere so nice that accepted dogs!
The food was good, simple and enjoyable and the home baked bread was a nice touch. Breakfast was again simple, buffet style but good and plenty of it. The packed lunches were a nice treat and the sandwiches were excellent.
The staff I found were a little unfriendly, but my husband thinks they were fine.
So overall a good experience, yes the decor was a little outdated and the food not particularly fancy but if you want a hotel with its own particular character intact this could be a good place for you!

We have just returned from a three night stay at Biggin Hall and have nothing but praise for the staff who were friendly and helpful. The standard of food was excellent, both delicious and very generous quantities! So many restaurants and hotels serve ready made meals but everything at Biggin Hall is homemade . I certainly prefer to have a smaller menu when I know the food is made on the premises rather than a huge menu where the food is bought in and put in a microwave.
We have had a short break here each winter for the last ten years and will certainly be back.

I'm glad you liked the surroundings and service but we are all puzzled by the reference to 1980 ish food. The house red, unlike house white, would not have been chilled. I am sorry it was insufficiently ‘Chambré’.

We arrived to a very frosty welcome from who i can only guess was kitchen staff - absolutely no customer service skills whatsoever, quite rude - I would suggest a receptionist on duty to make you feel welcome - I wanted to leave right there and then but happily once checked in things got better. We were on a special deal break which was very good value for money with lots of added touches - beautiful surrounding area and ideal for walking. We didn't like the one sitting for dinner but appreciated it was probably how they could afford to offer such a good deal. We would recommend the special deal as you cant really go wrong but not sure I would pay the full price.

There is normally a receptionist on duty and I am sorry this was not the case when you arrived. I'm glad to hear that you did not let this spoil an otherwise enjoyable stay.

Many reviews of this hotel are very positive. A minority of reviews are exceedingly negative. What is going on is fairly clear. The hotel is nobly set, on the doorstep of excellent walks in Upper Dovedale. The owners have worked hard to please and to secure their place in the 'Good Hotel Guide' (those portions of fresh milk in the fridge...; and the complimentary wine that is not all that bad). But they don't quite have the sure touch that marks an outstanding hotel. Our bedroom had some attractive good furniture, but was spoiled by some truly kitsch touches and by B&Q internal doors. I was looking forward to a good soak after coming back from a day's winter walk, but the hot water had run out at 5 o'clock in the afternoon. One morning we were wakened early by a rogue alarm call. Breakfast is strictly 8.00 to 9.00 am, but the porridge wasn't available until 8.15. At dinner, we rather felt that plates were being slapped down from behind us. None of these imperfections is dramatic, and the hotel has many attractive features. But it is quite expensive and so is best classed as offering average value.

The hot water system is designed to enable all 20 rooms to draw a bath at the same time. It can happen that if two baths in a room are drawn in quick succession the hot will run cold and will then take 20 minutes or so to recover. The hot water in most – but not all – rooms is now heated by both the central heating system and electric immersions to speed recovery time. This will hopefully apply to all rooms by April 2012.

There are photographs of all rooms on our website which show the style of furnishing (and doors!).
