“February Break”
Reviewed March 2, 2014

Stayed again for another few relaxing days. This time in February. Nothings changed, Dale View is still a very well equipped and comfortable cottage. The views and scenery still great. Still no Vodaphone signal - peace! Even one evening during the bad gales we lost the Sky signal so no TV - even more peace!! We will be back.

This was our first stay at Cotterill Farm and wont be our last, the cottage we stayed in was Dale View and it was lovely it had everything we needed for our stay the cottage was lovely and clean and very cosy. In our weeks stay we walked and biked 60 miles which is a record for us :). We visited Bakewell on the monday and saw the cattle auction, Bakewell is a lovely place you must try the Bakewell pudding, its also worth popping into Hartington its a lovely village with great shops. The walks in the area are really worth doing Biggin Dale is a lovely place to be. Patricks folders are very helpful with well written guides to the local walks there was even OS maps for guests to use during there stay everything has been thought of to make your stay enjoyable. Another nice place is Tissington the 1940's sweet shop is well worth a visit. The pub in Biggin ( Waterloo) is very nice and friendly and the beer is good we never tried the food but heard good reports about it maybe next time. We cant wait to go back next year.

Just came back from our second time at cotterill farm. This time we stayed at Dale View previously Hay Store. Gorgeous setting both great cottages to stay in. Clean and tidy. Loads of information packs on the walks and surrounding areas. My 2 boys with special needs love the place and were sad to come home. No problems with wi-fi even got a signal on orange mobile phone network. Looked at prices to stay in and around this area and I will say hand on heart Patricks and Frances are excellent compared to what you get elsewhere. We will be looking again to stay next August 2014. Finish off by saying HOT WATER IS CONSTANT. Mark and Tracy Williams from Gloucestershire.

A return visit for us, staying in the Milking Parlour this time. We chose this as we took my mother who has limited mobility. Whilst not an official "accessible" property, it is all ground floor, no steps and wide doors (useful for the wheelchair). The standard of accomodation and the information packs (and the welcome bottle of wine which my husband enjoyed as I don't drink) was great. Only real gripes for us really was that the single bed is rather high (i'm 5' 3" and the top of the mattress was just below my 'derrier') which made it difficult for mother to get in and out of, although It is probably fine if you don't have mobility issues; and the toilet is on a raised pedestal to assist those with mobility but it is much higher than the specialised one we have at mothers so again, a bit difficult. Otherwise, another great stay.

We were lucky with the weather and were able to visit some great locations and enjoy some good meals out in the local pubs. A very tranquil stay.

Sometimes when you return to a place where you had a great time before, you can be disappointed.....not in this case. It was as tranquil as we remembered and we instantly were able to relax and unwind.

Since our last visit in July 2011, there have been several improvements to The Dairy, most notably a sun room on the side of the cottage with beautiful views. There is also now Sky Plus TV.

The cottage is well equipped for self-catering, although we spent several mealtimes at The Waterloo Inn - a great pub just 5-10 mins walk away across the fields or by road. We particularly like the location of Cotterill Farm - lots of great walks direct from the door as well as bike hire available, which we took advantage of. Agree with the previous comment about Ashbourne being downhill and the way back requiring more effort!

Although the owners live on-site, don't let this put you off. Unless you want to see Patrick & Frances, they will not intrude on your holiday. With that said though, they are always willing to help and are very pleasant.

One previous reviewer had commented on the WI-FI - during the week we were at the property, we did not experience any issues. Another reviewer commented on the abundance of information that is made available - yes there are many information folders in the cottage and some visitors might find this overwhelming. However, but if you don't want to read it, you don't have to. On the other hand if you don't wish to do your own research, you can instead refer to the folders prepared by Patrick.

Overall, Cotterill Farm is in a lovely location, well-equipped and we hope to visit again for more R&R.

In terms of location, I don't think that Cotterill Farm and its cottages can be beaten. The farm is in fantastic countryside and within a stone' throw of the very best of the Derbyshire Dales (my personal favourite, Wolfscote Dale, is just a short walk away down Biggin Dale). The 5-10 miles of countryside north of Ashbourne up to Hartington is stunningly beautiful and Cotterill Farm is right in there in a quiet, countryside setting. Very tranquil/peaceful.
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to walks. Biggin Dale is on your doorstep (wear stout shoes as rough underfoot) leading down to Wolfscote Dale, Milldale, Dovedale and Beresford Dale.
The Tissington Trail is readily reached from the farm for some great cycling or walking (again, fabulous views from the trail) with a cycle down to Ashbourne and back representing a great day out (just watch out for the fact that it is a gentle downhill slope from Parsley Hay to Ashbourne which can make the return journey hard work). We found the Tissington Trail much more enjoyable than the Manifold Trail at Hulme End.
Hartington village is an easy walk from the farm ... We had an excellent cream tea in the village tea shop/post office. Tissington village also a must visit; one of the prettiest villages in England. For a good cream tea near Tissington, go to Bassett Wood Farm (much better and quieter than the commercial outlet in the village).
During our stay, we also squeezed in a visit to Alton Towers (about 30 mins in the car). Get there early before it gets too busy.
The Barn is a bit of a Tardis when it comes to space. From the outside, it appears to be quite small. However, my wife and I comfortably stayed for a week with our two teenage children without tripping over each other. Two toilets/bathrooms in such a small cottage is a real bonus. The Barn also has an outside, secure cupboard which can house a maximum of two adult bikes (any more can be secured to the Barn or up in the main farm area).
Overall, we found the Barn surprisingly spacious (aided, perhaps, by some good weather which meant that we were out and about for most of each day).
We dined out on a couple of occasions. In the heart of Biggin (1/4 of a mile walk) is the Waterloo Inn; very much a village pub, we found the staff welcoming and there is plenty of outdoor seating in good weather. Food was good with large helpings, although the menu is perhaps a little limited. Excellent steak and ale pie and lovely chips! We also went up to the Duke of York (about 5 miles up the road towards Buxton). Similar sort of menu but, perhaps, a little more "up market".
In conclusion, as a holiday base for walking, cycling and visiting the Dales, Cotterill Farm cannot be beaten in terms of location. Everything really is right on your doorstep. The Barn represents good accommodation (without being special) in a stunning area.

I appreciate your review and fully agree with all its detail - even including the bit about the Barn being good without being special - we think, its a good summing up (those thinking of booking and looking for something nearer the 'special mark' might wish to consider four of our other six cottages, the Dairy, Dale, the Milking Parlour and the Hay Store, all of which border on a five star grading and all of which achieved the Gold Award from the country's official grading authority.) Bit disappointed with the level of the rating from you, particularly re cleaning as we do pride ourselves on standards here and our various Inspectors over the last four years have not just given us 5 star in this respect, but actually an almost unheard of 100%. Hope we can see you again if not next year perhaps in the years to come.
