We went here for a special dinner, and Roxy delivered. It is housed in one of the old refurbished theatres, in its own space but sharing the building with the bustling, people watching treasure that is Everybody's (restaurant and bar). Think exposed brick, polished timber and steel (not so keen on the harsh staircase look but the rest looks great). The staff were all good but a bit mixed but some (like the sommelier) were excellent, in general not as polished or professional as some other Auckland establishments. This needs a bit of work to get consistency across the board I think.
We opted for al la carte. I had the "fish soup" which was a delight. Not a soup at all, lots of perfectly cooked morsels of seafood, with a jellied consomme (they called it a bouillabaise). Delicious. My husband had a smoked oyster entree which really delivered too. These were our highlights. For main I had lamb, which was cooked in three different ways, as was my husband's razorback pork. Some preps were more successful than others, particularly with the pig which was a little dry in two of the preparations. The other was moist, succulent and delicious. Some of my lamb could have been eaten with a spoon, it was so beautifully slow cooked. The sides for both mains were excellent, thoughtful and interesting.
The wine had some real gems and was well priced. Yay the 2001 Schuster Omihi Hills. Overall this was an excellent evening I look forward to repeating it some time soon.
