The atmosphere is rustic, cosy French style creating a lovely warm ambience in which to enjoy truly French cuisine made from fresh local ingredients and created by Chef Gilles Papst. French cuisine just as it should be, and just as you would eat in France... the ideal place to meet with good friends and linger over delicious food and wine.

“Had excellent lunch, want to try dinner!”
Reviewed May 8, 2013 via mobile

French food with a slight nz twist we had clams in a garlic broth/sauce accompanied with the best hand cut fries/chips I have ever had delicious. The dinner menu had more classic French dishes so would like to try these next time!

“A little bit of France in NZ”
Reviewed April 16, 2013

Lovely authentic French restaurant doing typical French cuisine with NZ terroir. Have the sharing platter, but beware it's quite large for two people, better maybe for 3 or more. The steaks are always awesome, served with what is definitely the BEST bearnaise in NZ, maybe the world! Great wine list with a few NZ wines of course. Super cozy in winter, wish this place had outdoor seating in summer.

“Will definitely be back”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

Our group of seven booked Ile de France after reading good reviews. Parking on the street has time limits, but there is a parking building across the street. The cafe is situated in a character building, giving a pleasant ambience, and good light. Despite the hard surfaces, the noise level was bearable, though our table was tucked around the side of the counter, and not in the main area. Being just before Christmas, the cafe was full, and with only two waiting staff, the service was slow. The food however, was superb, and authentically French. There is a well-planned choice on the menu, as well as specials on the blackboard. I am careful where I eat duck, but is was perfectly cooked here. One guest said the snails were among the best he had eaten. All diners at our table pronounced their dishes to be lip-smackingly good. With main courses in the $33 to $45 bracket, the prices are on the dearer side, but worth every centime.

“C'est magnifique”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

Just a read a glowing review in the newsletter from eattherenow co nz, which prompted us to come here the same day. Beautiful room, lovely ambiance and all the staff seem to be French, so in other words the real deal. In the review it says that the chef is from Alsace, so that sometimes the food is almost German.

We shared the Presse au jambon et foie gras terrine as an entree which came with freshly baked crusty bread, the terrine was beautiful and not too salty, you could taste all the different flavours. Then we both decided to have the special, a milk-fed veal dish, with all sorts of baby veg and a side of roast potatoes was included, so we didn't have to order a side dish. It was delish and fragrant and just the right amount of food.

For dessert Greg has the Creme Brulee, very light and airy, and I the Marquise au chocolat, intensely rich, I let Greg finish the last wee bit.

Altogether a really relaxing evening, which we both needed. The waitress advised us on wine matches, which were spot on.

I look forward to going back there again during the summer months for a glass of rosé. You can join their mailing list as they hold wine tastings / celebrations, the beaujolais nouveau release is one of them.

So pleased to have a restaurant like this so local to us! Use it or lose it people!

“Stunning”
Reviewed October 3, 2012 via mobile

The food is so amazing and it is truly French. The chef is friendly and he remembers you when you come back. I think it is a great hidden treasure in Newmarket. If you haven't been there then you need to get on your bike and eat their stunning food.
