“Beautiful beach”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

Gorgeous beach with black sand and stark hills in the distance. The current is very strong though - so keep that in mind. It's also worth walking to the waterfall and through the forest. There are some great views if you get high enough

“Beautiful wild beach in winter. Worth the drive!”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

Went out here last weekend when it was threatening rain and was blowing a gale.
Wow - this was a beautiful spot. The walk through the twisted pohutkawa glade was outstanding before walking through the dunes to the expansive beach.
We even saw a fur seal resting on the beach that apparently comes from a colony that live on Watchmans Island just off the beach.
Plenty of walks to do - Caves in the hillside, waterfalls, lookouts.
Take your rubbish home with you. Toilet facilities but no shops so stop at Piha for your coffee and icecream!

“Great West Coast Beach”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

It's a tricky road to navigate getting down to Karekare, it's narrow and windy.... but once you reach the bottom the rewards are worth it. Sand hills, black sand, crashing surf, wild forestry and of course the beautiful Karekare Falls. Just stunning. I find the best time to go is on the cusp of summer - around the start of November. It's still very quiet at that time. Well worth a visit.

“Wild and Beautiful”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

I've been visiting Karekare for 50 years since first being invited to stay with a childhood friend at his family's holiday home. (Kiwis call them "batches" - at least in the North Island.)
Nothing much has changed in that time except the ever-changing contours of the beach and the stream that crosses it. Also, the road got improved a long time ago too making it very accessible but it is down a windy side road so lots more people go to Piha beach leaving Karekare alone in its wilderness. It is as wild and beautiful as ever but there are plenty of amzing tracks with scenery to die for (soaring cliffs, waterfalls, giant sand dunes, blow holes) and a surf beach which is well patrolled in Summer. The name means big waves. The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is that you need to take your own supplies. There is no store, but maybe that is a reason to give it 5 stars!

One of the most awe inspiring places I have ever been to! Felt like another world. Beautiful and wild with crashing surf and sparkling dark sand.
