“Great location - very friendly service - nice atmosphere”

Devonport is a beautiful village, and The Esplanade Hotel is located in the centre with a view on the city and the harbour (It's just a 10 minutes ferry ride to Auckland CBD). The service is very friendly and we really enjoyed staying there. Would love to come back again!

We decided to have one last night of luxury before slumming it in the hostels of Auckland and then our flight home and decided to head for Devonport which Lonely Planet really recommended. The Esplanade has an enviable position, and we paid extra for a room with the view over towards the Sky Tower (expensive for NZ at $230 but cheap for UK). We didn't exactly get that view - instead we looked out over a park by the beach and a lamp-post (which was on all night and made the room very bright, even in the dark). Room was on the top floor and was oak-panelled. Hotel is old by NZ standards - 1903 or something. Very nice restaurant next-door, 'Mecca' - HIGHLY recommended.

VERY overpriced. Stuffy room. Our toddler could actually lock himself in the bathroom & on top of that, escape into the corridor (low door knobs). Linen average quality. Very noisy, it seems to be the local hoons racetrack to the naval centre. Poor renovations. No airconditioning or fans, we had to ask for a pedastal fan for our room. I could go on forever...

Overpriced - great location, nice fittings, but it was like being in a ship: nice sea view, tiny room, hot and stuffy and a constant engine noise. The outside and the fittings were authentic, but everything else was done on the cheap - only 2 towels, no extra pillows, no little extras like bath gel. Even the toilet paper was industrial!

And for this they charged $260. I have paid $150 a night for much better accommodation.

  • Liked — the outside of hte building
  • Disliked — Way overpriced - very miserly on the little things that make up the experience

My wife and I stayed in a Harbour View Suite for one night on a package which included a two course dinner, a quality bottle of champagne and breakfast. The room was quite large but the general quality was let down in some areas.

Firstly, the towells were of the 'hospital' variety; not the thick quality towells you expect for this kind of rate. There were only two towells, so it meant a damp towell each in the morning.

The beds were less than ideal. The bed was two king singles put together with a distinct ridge down the middle which was uncomfortable if you moved on to it. There were only two pillows which meant there was no choice of firmness. A hotel charging the advertised rack rate normally has a choice of pillows.

The bathroom was small and not at all in character, with cheap fittings.

The television may as well not have been there, It was a poor quality 14" CRT version which slid out of a cupboard. and swivelled. It was so far from the bed it almost required binoculars to watch.

The hotel staff were professional but not particularly warm. It felt a little like we should feel privledged to stay there.

There is no car-parking on site and the staff pointed to a public car-park a few hundred yards down the road. This free car-park serviced the ferry terminal and I was lucky to find a space on that evening.

The heating was not controllable as far as I could tell and it was too hot for sleeping.

The front part of the room was a splendid parlour overlooking the harbour and ferry terminal. This was the highlight.

The adjoining Mecca restaurant had superb food and the staff were excellent.

This hotel has great potential but at the moment it's at a 5-star price with a 2 1/2-star experience. They seem to have taken the cheap option on the little things that make for a quality experience.

I disagree with one reviewer that said Auckland is not worth visiting. It is a great city with many attractions and a beautiful harbour. Ferrys regularly run across to the heart of the city and it takes only 10 minutes from this hotel. Devonport is a nice spot to explore with great cafes and quaint shops.

We stayed here at the end of a ten day trip to the North Island (just got back last week) and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had been cycling and "off the beaten path" so while Devonport is admittedly quieter than Auckland, we liked having the opportunity to relax there or take the short and convenient ferry ride over to Auckland.

We loved the hotel - nice view, large room, and very friendly and accomodating staff. My husband and I often choose "boutique" hotels if your definition of boutique is small, non-corproate, non-chain, and unique. We find the friendly laid back attitude welcoming rather than "substandard" but if that is not what you are looking for you have to weigh that into your decision.

We also enjoyed the food in the hotel's restaurant and the outoddr patio for a happy hour cocktail. We would welcome the opportunity to return to the Esplanade any time!

My wife and I stayed at the Esplanade on the first leg of our recent trip to NZ. From the outside the Hotel looks very promising, lovely Victorian building, not unlike an old fashion English sea side hotel.

Our room was very average, no wardrobe to hang our cloths in and had a very tired look about it. The staff were very pleasant but did not seem very well trained. Perhaps we had been spoilt coming over in Asia. They seemed to employ a lot of students who were rather to laid back.

We were questioned one night when we arrived back at the Hotel for a night cap and had to prove we were resident by producing our room key. Bar staff again bored and uninterested.

The Esplanade calls its self a boutique hotel, this rings alarm bells with me, boutique seems to mean over-hyped. Sadly it does not live up to its reputation.

Another word of advice, Devonport is very pleasant during the day and early evening but dies a death after 8pm. All the local restaurants stop serving food after 8.30pm and this is in the hight of the summer season.

My advice, steer clear of Auckland (this is no Sydney)Wellington and Christchurch have far more to offer the traveller
